A pair of East Valley soccer teams remain unbeaten.
Hamilton's boys team won its third Tempe Diablos Classic soccer tournament in the past four years with a 2-0 win over neighboring Chandler last weekend at Tempe Sports Complex.
The Huskies remain unbeaten at 8-0, and outscored its five tournament opponents 14-1 in the tournament. Connor Follet (on a crossing pass from Andrew Holland) and Gabe Para-Munoz scored goals for Hamilton in the championship match. It was the same duo which scored goals in Hamilton's 2-0 win over Desert Vista in the semifinals.
Chandler lost its first match of the season after playing stellar defense throughout most of the tournament. These two teams meet again on Tuesday (Dec. 17) at Chandler H.S.
On the girls' side, a new-look roster and a new coach hasn't fazed Highland. The Hawks beat Desert Vista, 2-1, in a come-from-behind victory in the semifinals of the tournament (the Thunder beat Highland in last year's state tournament semifinals), then knocked off Hamilton, 1-0, in the championship match on a goal by Carley Cope.
Highland is now 6-0 with the title win under new coach Andy Barber, as the Hawks handed Hamilton (6-1) its first loss of the season.
Both teams had several scoring opportunities, and Hamilton had its best chances in the first half, but Highland GK Amanda Witherow made four saves.
