No. 7 Pinnacle couldn’t stop No. 11 Westview, so the Pioneers' season came to an end.
Though it got out to a 7-0 lead, Pinnacle saw the Knights score the next 42 points and go on to defeat the Pioneers, 56-20, in the first round of the Division I playoffs on Friday night.
The Pioneers couldn’t stop Westview senior running back Seivion Morris, who rushed for 288 yards. The Knights had 469 rushing yards; quarterback Kordell Provchy added 93, as well as, throwing for 181 yards and two touchdowns.
Morris scored three times all on long runs, 80, 52 and 33.
“When you make the playoffs you either have a night like this or you win a state championship. It’s going to end like this for 15 teams,” said Pinnacle coach Dana Zupke.
“We couldn’t stop them and a lot of it was right up the middle. The explosive plays killed us.”
Westview had 11 plays of 21 yards or more, six over 31 yards.
“Our kids really executed,” said Westview coach Jeff Bowen. “We’re playing well and healthy at the right time.”
Pinnacle became unhealthy early.
Junior star running back Josh Hoekstra, who came into the game with 1,522 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns, left the game midway through the first quarter with an apparent left shoulder injury.
“It put a monkey-wrench into our plans, but we have backups (Evan Tompkins and Matt Dietz), but they’re both starters on defense, too,” Zupke said.
With the score tied 7-7, Pinnacle forced a turnover and recovered it at the Westview 18, but the possession ended in a missed field goal. On the next play, Morris went for the first of his long touchdown runs, an 80-yard sprint for a 14-7 Knights’ advantage.
More long runs followed, and it was a tough way to end the season for the seventh-seeded Pioneers, which advanced to the quarterfinals last season.
“I’m real proud of our guys,” said Zupke. “We’ve got some young talent and I was real proud of our seniors. They showed leadership and played with heart.
“I felt they never gave up.”
