In the Division I girls final it was sophomore Madison Clarke of Phoenix Xavier who survived the 98-degree heat to beat Tucson Salpointe’s Caroline Amos to win the championship. It was a nice rebound for Clarke who got beat by Courtney Amos of Tucson Salpointe in last year’s final.

“It was tough because of the heat,” Clarke said.

Caroline Amos did not make it any easier on Clarke who had to go three sets to get the win. Score were: 6-0, 3-6, 6-0. Clarke won the match when Amos double faulted on the final point.

Clarke credited her ability to place the ball in specific areas to make Amos work hard for every point. It worked to near perfection in the first and third sets.

It was the first meeting of the season for the two top seeds in Division I. They were scheduled to meet earlier in the year, but Clarke wasn’t able to play.

In the doubles Xavier was again the victor with Margaret Cohen and Scarlet Rush besting teammates Emily Serrano and Madison Majerle, 6-1, 6-0.
