Maricopa High strung together back-to-back wins for the first time this season with a 56-14 victory over Gila Bend in 2A West Region play Friday night.

The Rams (3-5, 3-2) need only a victory over winless Tonopah in two weeks to wrap up a playoff berth.

The game ended with 7:19 left in the third quarter when the 42-point rule came into play after Will Clemans scored on a 15-yard run.

Scofield led Maricopa with 79 yards rushing on four carries, and teammate Justin Zabawa added 63 yards on three carries.

The defense stepped up with 12 sacks, four by Bronson Figeroa.

“I figured we would need a 2-4 regional record to make the playoffs,” Maricopa coach Liermann said. “Our goal was to get to the playoffs. We are peaking at the right time, we dealt with adversity this year and this win was a good confidence builder.”

Adrian Fierros started the 28-point first quarter with a four yard run, capped by a conversion run by Matt Fierros. The Rams defense also got into the action with a touchdown by Boyd Scofield on a fumble recovery.

“We’ve been building on what we have going,” said Liermann. “Working on the fundamentals.”

Maricopa travels to Red Mountain High School Thursday to take on the Mountain Lion Juniors.
