VX Roundup 1/27: Basha basketball sets records in win

It was a record-breaking night for Basha on Friday night.

The Bears (21-3) easily dispatched of Casa Grande, 97-63, in a Division I, Section II matchup.

Jaron Hopkins set a school record with 43 points. Torren Jones was not far behind with a career-high 39 points on 19 of 21 shooting.

Jones also added a school-record 27 rebounds. Basha held just a six point lead at the end of the first quarter (29-23), but the Bears outscored the Cougars 68-40 in the final three quarters. Jonathan Milligan led Casa Grande with 22 points.

In other boys basketball matchups, host-Red Mountain beat Desert Ridge, 69-62, in a Division I, Section II game.

Justin Park led the Mountain Lions (19-7) with 19 points. Logan Larsen and Kevin Torres added 13 points each and Travis Meeker finished with 11. Larsen also added 11 assists. The Jaguars got a big game from Derreck Brooks who finished with 38 points. Cody Pennington added 14 points.

Dobson held on for a 65-62 win over Gilbert in a Division I, Section II game. Marcus Tipton led the Mustangs with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Anthony Bryant led the Tigers with 15 points.

Visiting Tempe beat Higley, 72-61, in a Division II, Section III game. Nyial Watson led the Buffaloes (18-7, 11-5) with 24 points, four rebounds and four steals. Walter Kimble added 11 points and seven rebounds, while Emanuel Gant finished with 10 points and nine rebounds. The Knights were led by Damien Groshong's 13 points.

Mountain View beat McClintock, 79-66, in a Division I, Section III game. Camyn Boone led the Toros (17-6) with 26 points. Payton Dastrup added 22 points and Mitch Wallace finished with 19 points for Mountain View. McClintock got a big game from Ben Cuevas, who led all scorers with 41 points.

Mountain Pointe beat Phoenix North, 70-63, in overtime in a Division I non-section game. The Pride (13-9) held North to just three points in overtime to get the win. Kari Holloway led Mountain Pointe with 21 points, while Jordan Bellamy and Tre Campbell added 14 points each.

Girls Basketball

Red Mountain beat Desert Ridge, 68-31, in a Division I, Section II game. Gabi Alonzo led the Mountain Lions with 19 points, Mariah Willadsen added 18 points and Shea Brown finished with 14 points.

Chandler rolled past Mesquite, 71-44, in a Division I, Section II game. Simone Westbrook led the Wolves with 20 points, Dezirae Elias added 19 points and Kylene Knutson finished with 16 points. Cecily Wilson led the Wildcats with 24 points.
