Phoenix St. Mary's swimming coach Carlos Sanchez will replace Ric Moreno as the school's athletic director beginning in the 2008-2009 school year.
Sanchez is currently the boys and girls swimming coach and a math teacher at the school.
A phone message left with Sanchez wasn't immediately returned.
St. Mary's principal Mark Mauro confirmed the change in an e-mail Wednesday.
"Mr. Sanchez brings to this position a wealth of knowledge and experience in both the areas of athletics and the St. Mary's community," Mauro wrote.
Moreno, whose contract was not renewed, had been the Knights' A.D. since 2006 when he replaced the retired Jim Sanford. Moreno said budget constraints and reduced enrollment were a factor in the school reducing spending, and in turn, shedding salaries.
"Two years ago I thought this was where I was going to spend the rest of my life, with the tradition and atmosphere," Moreno said. "It was a really neat experience, I guess it's not where I'm supposed to be."
Moreno said he has signed on to be Gilbert Mesquite's head athletic trainer and teach three sports medicine classes. Moreno started his career in athletic training at the University of Arizona 25 years ago, and has worked with everything from Little League to major league baseball teams since.
He hopes his new job will allow him to spend more time with his family since the school is a mile away from his Chandler home.
"I missed that," he said. "It'll be neat to have that relationship with the kids every day. That'll be fun."
Moreno will retain his A.D. position until June 30.
