VX Boys basketball sectional roundup 2/8: Red Mtn. wins, Corona escapes, Basha falls

No. 6 Red Mountain overcame a slow start to knock off No. 3 Oro Valley Ironwood Ridge, 65-46, in the first round of the Division I, Section II tournament at Desert Ridge High School.

After trailing 18-12 at the end of the first quarter, Red Mountain outscored the Nighthawks 53-28 in the final three quarters to pull away with the victory.

Ryan Bunker led the way for the Lions with a double-double. Bunker scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

Red Mountain will play No. 7 Hamilton at 5:45 p.m. on Friday at Mesquite High School. The Huskies upset No. 2 Basha, 77-66, to advance to the second round.

In other Division I, Section II games, No. 1 Corona del Sol edged out No. 8 Dobson, 64-63, and No. 5 Gilbert beat No. 4 Sierra Vista Buena, 69-48.

The Aztecs and Tigers will meet in the quarterfinals at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Mesquite High School.

Division II

Saguaro used a strong start to power past Paradise Valley with a 76-45 win in the first round of the Division II, Section II tournament at Saguaro High School.

Mike Houser led the Sabercats with a game-high 30 points.

Sixth-seeded Saguaro will play No. 2 Arcadia at 5:45 p.m. on Friday at Coronado High School. Arcadia defeated No. 7 Youngker 73-56 to advance to the quarterfinals.

No. 8 Tempe could not complete a furious fourth quarter rally and fell, 68-60, to No. 1 Betty H. Fairfax in its first round game at Coronado High School.

The Buffalos trailed 62-60 with 50 seconds left but could not come up with the tying basket before Fairfax pulled away.

Nyial Watson scored a team-high 29 points and also had three assists and two steals.

Jack Carrethers added 15 points. Emanuel Gant scored eight points and also had seven rebounds, three steals and a block.

Stacy Davis scored a game-high 25 points for Fairfax.

Fairfax will face No. 4 Sierra Linda at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Coronado High School. Sierra Linda defeated No. 5 Phoenix Sunnyslope 60-52 to move on to the quarterfinals.

Division III

Roberto Reyes led No. 2 Gilbert Christian to a 67-39 win over No. 7 Florence in the opening round of the Division III, Section II tournament at Cholla High School.

Reyes scored 22 points for the Knights and was one of four players to finish in double-digits. Dylan Bliss added 16 points, Sam Jones scored 14 and Connor Patterson finished with 10.

Gilbert Christian will play No. 3 Empire in the second round at 4:30 p.m. on Friday at Pueblo High School. Empire beat No. 6 Tombstone 61-43 in its first round game.

In other Division III, Section II action, No. 1 Thatcher beat No. 8 Safford, 56-37, and No. 5 Rio Rico defeated No. 4 Globe 50-48.

Thatcher will play Rio Rico at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Pueblo High school.
