Prep highlights: Warner’s hit keeps Jaguars perfect

D.W. Warner lined a hit to score the winning run in the eighth inning as the Mesa Desert Ridge baseball team stayed unbeaten with a 6-5 victory over visiting Phoenix Trevor Browne on Thursday.

After the leadoff hitter got on base in the eighth and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, Warner drove the ball over the right fielder’s head to win the game.

The Jaguars’ Ben Veach pitched seven of the eight innings, allowing eight hits and four earned runs, but he struck out 12 batters. Alex Villar came on in relief to pick up the win.

Jake Barrett hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth for the Jaguars (10-0).


No. 1 Desert Mountain backed up its top ranking in 5A-I by dominating No. 2 Corona del Sol 14-3 in a five-inning game at Corona. The Wolves (8-1) blew the game open with eight runs in the second and starter Brad Douthit shut down the Aztec bats the rest of the way. Douthit pitched all five innings and did not allow an earned run while striking out five. Taylor Lindsey went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Lance Harper went 2-for-3 with a triple and  three runs scored for the Wolves.

Taylor Giannonnati and Mike Felton each went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for the Aztecs. ...

Matt Shannon went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead Mountain View past Tucson Salpointe Catholic 11-4 at home. Tim Willsey had a pair of hits and two RBIs for the Toros. ...

Scottsdale Christian used a seven-run fifth inning to dispatch host Apache Junction 17-2 in five innings in round-robin play of the Seton Sentinel Tournament.

Brian Jones and Kyle Edgett of the Eagles (1-1) held the Prospectors to just two hits.

Jacob Storrer went 5-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs to lead the Eagles. ...

Derek Wharton homered twice to lead Red Mountain past host Desert Vista 12-6.

Dean Espy went 3-for-3 for the Mountain Lions. …

Josh Melendez hit a single into the left-center gap to drive in two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, helping Basha rally for a 15-14 victory over visiting Mesa High. With the Bears (8-0) trailing 14-13 in the seventh, they got their first two runners on base and sacrificed them over to set up Melendez’s game-winning hit. Jordan Adair went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs for the Jackrabbits.


Rachel Meyer’s two-run single in the third helped lead Mesquite past host Highland 4-2 in a 5A-I Fiesta Region game. Alexis Lawton led the Wildcats with two hits. Ashleigh Seipel had two hits for the Hawks. ...

Carissa Reiseinger went for 5-for-5 and picked up the win on the mound to lead Seton Catholic past host Notre Dame 14-2. Kelsey Rodriguez hit two homers and drove in four runs, and Megan Johnson also homered for the Sentinels. …

Kendra Perez came in on relief and pitched host Marcos de Niza to a 5-4 victory over Casa Grande in a 5A nonregion matchup.  Perez threw five innings and struck out nine.  Ranique Rodriguez went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Padres (5-4).


Anthony Alvarez had 13 kills as host Basha improved to 4-0 with a 25-11, 25-22, 25-19 win over Hamilton. Cody Denton added six kills and two aces and Zach Douglas had 13 assists for the Bears. ...

Mountain Pointe won a tight five-game match against host Highland, 19-25, 25-13, 26-28, 31-29, 21-19. Alex Hamill had 26 assists for the Pride (4-0), who handed the Hawks their first loss (3-1).


Neil Evans shot a 2-under 34 to lead Scottsdale Christian (154) to a victory over Phoenix Country Day (161) and Valley Christian (177). Evans made two eagles on par 5s on the day and was the only golfer under par.

The Eagles’ Chris O’Shell and Mark Hopkins finished third and fourth, respectively.
