Memorable Moments from the 2011 Season

Sanders sits starters: Chaparral and Saguaro resumed their rivalry this year thanks to the geographic scheduling, but with the hype machine in full swing entering the final regular season game, the week-long wonderment was whether Saguaro coach John Sanders would play his starters, or sit them to avoid further injuries in preparation for the Div. III playoffs. He chose the latter, and the Sabercats were creamed by Chaparral, 65-0, on national TV, which caused a backlash with parents, alumni and fans who wanted Sanders fired. Sanders and Saguaro may have gotten the last laugh by winning the state championship, but for many it's an afterthought after what happened against their neighboring rivals.

Desert Vista hammers Hamilton: Raise your hand if you saw a 45-19 victory for Desert Vista over three-time defending champion Hamilton coming? OK, unless you were in the Thunder locker room, put your hand down. After the first meeting, a 35-10 victory for Hamilton, much was the same was expected. What happened, however, was RB/LB Mike Arredondo led a no-nonsense, unified bunch found belief that a win was realistic even after that first meeting, and Desert Vista throttled the Huskies up front early to take a 21-0 lead that was never threatened to win the school's first championship since 1998. It ended Hamilton's 53-game winning streak, the longest in the country among public schools.

Chaparral's 3-peat: The season began with a whooping at the hands of Las Vegas Bishop Gorman in the Barry Sollenberger Classic. By that point weeks of waiting were underway as to whether transfer Jarvis Lewis would be declared eligible after his former school, Glendale Raymond Kellis, accused Chaparral of recruiting the defensive lineman. The Firebirds had a new defensive coordinator after Conrad Hamilton became the head coach at Phoenix North Canyon, new offensive and defensive lineman across the board, and lost of starting running back Lucas Petrullo until the playoffs with injury. None of that mattered in the Firebirds third consecutive state championship (the only school other than Hamilton to achieve this feat), as Connor Brewer and Davonte Neal finished record-setting career. Now eyes are set on the future after the Firebirds announced their plan to petition up to Division I.

Record breakers: Record books will have to be re-written in a big way this offseason. Saguaro's D.J. Foster set single-game records for rushing (508 yards) and touchdowns (10), not to mention 60 touchdowns for a single season. Chaparral QB Connor Brewer's 100 touchdown passes are a new state record for a career. Desert Ridge's Joey Counts set a big-school record with 409 yards rushing against Phoenix North Canyon. Even Scottsdale Prep got in on the act as Aidan Wright (535 yards passing in a game, 3,020 yards for a season, 50 TD passes) and teammate Matt Munsil (19 receptions, 279 yards in one game) set Division VI (8-man) marks as well.

Jerry! Jerry! Jerry!: The best touchdown of the season came in a blowout. Desert Ridge led Mesa, 55-14, when Jaguars coach Jeremy Hathcock and Mesa coach Kelley Moore got together on the field for a short discussion in the fourth quarter. It was then agreed the two teams allowed Desert Ridge junior Jerry O'Toole - who suffers from a rare genetic disorder called Noonan's Syndrome marked by delayed development - was allowed by Mesa's defense to score a touchdown for the final margin of the game. Hathcock said assistant coaches from both schools discussed the possibility during the week, and when the opportunity came up in the fourth quarter, Hathcock said he caught Moore's eye and they went ahead with the plan. Even in an age of egos, recruiting allegations and running-up-the-score accusations, there's few more classy than Moore.
