Tucson Sunnyside rushed for 310 yards and held host Casa Grande to just 39 yards from scrimmage in the second half as the Cougars lost 49-6 to the Blue Devils Friday night in a 5A-I nonregion game.
The Cougars (1-6) made the first half for their homecoming game interesting after wideout Torrey Edwards caught a 65-yard pass from quarterback Ben Rodriguez to cut Sunnyside’s lead to 14-6 with 7:25 left in the second quarter.
But the Blue Devils (7-0) responded with a 97-yard drive, capped by a 2-yard run by quarterback Jamie Valdez with 26 seconds left before halftime for a 21-6 lead.
On the first play of the second half, Sunnyside running back Jovan Stevenson ran for a 68-yard score to put the game out of reach.
“We came out the first half and played pretty darn well,” said Cougars coach Tracy Stuart. “But we’ve got to find a way to play two halves.”
Casa Grande running back Harnish Ayora was effective in the first half, rushing for 64 yards on 10 carries. But the Blue Devils held Ayora to a single yard on seven second-half rushes.
Sunnyside’s Stevenson carried 11 times for 166 yards and two TDs and added a 20-yard interception return for a score.
