VX Roundup 1/7: Highland slips past Xavier late in girls hoops

Offense was at a premium, but Olivia Lucero scored 11 points and the Rudd sisters (Rebecca and Liz) each scored nine points as Highland's 13-8 fourth-quarter advantage was enough to beat Xavier, 41-39, on Tuesday night.

The Hawks remain undefeated at 7-0 in power rankings games.

Megan Brown had nine rebounds, three steals and two blocks for the Hawks. Melinda Myers added eight rebounds and Lucero had four assists.

Katie Werner scored 26 points for the Gators in the loss. Highland will host Gilbert on Friday night while Xavier (5-3) plays at St. Mary's on Wednesday.

 

BOYS SOCCER

Tempe 5, McClintock 0:  Jose Luis Soto notched a hat trick for the Buffaloes in the win, while Kevin Reyes scored the other two goals for Tempe in a shutout of its city rival.

Scottsdale Christian 3, Horizon Honors 0: Cole Lenderink notched a hat trick for SCA in the win. The Eagles will take on Fountain Hills on Thursday.

GIRLS SOCCER

Corona del Sol 2, Mesquite 1: Corona's Steph Petre scored with 1:07 left in regulation, then scored the game-winner in the first overtime to lead Corona to a come-from-behind win over visiting Mesquite. Taylour Rohme made a brillant breakaway save in the final ten minutes to keep the score 1-0 in favor of Mesquite and set up Petre's heroics. The Aztecs play Sandra Day O'Connor on Tuesday afternoon.

Mesa 6, Westwood 0:  Aubrey Blau scored four goals as the Jackrabbits cruised to victory. Logan Fischer and Loey Moen each added goals for Mesa, which is unbeaten in power rankings matches (3-0-1).

Campo Verde 5, Tempe 0:Breanna Olsen had a goal and an assist and Taylor Frick had two assists for the Coyotes (6-0 in Div. III), who also beat Williams Field, 6-1, last Friday. Lauren Crenshaw had two goals. Breanna Olsen had a goal and an assist and Morgan Martinez had two assists against Williams Field.

Chandler Prep 0, Valley Christian 0:  Despite 13 shots on goal, the night ended in a draw for the two Chandler schools in Div. III. V.C. defenders Taylor Robertson, Captain Jenelle Hunt, Larea Hunt, Ashleigh Lawton, and goalkeeper Lexi Kalfas (14 saves) preserved the tie for the Trojans.
