Following two close finishes in a row, the Hamilton football team left no doubt on Friday night with a 42-0 victory over Gilbert. The Huskies dominated from the opening kickoff, scoring on all five of their first half possessions.

“It was a great first half,” Hamilton coach Steve Belles said. “I thought our first team played really well and I thought our special teams played really well.”

Hamilton (6-2) received the opening kickoff and went 78 yards in over six minutes for their first score of the game. Senior quarterback Sam Sasso found receiver Elijah Williams for an 8-yard touchdown pass. It was the first of four touchdown passes on the night for the Hamilton signal caller.

“He’s a good quarterback, but when you are playing against good teams every week it is tough to get confidence,” said Belles. “Hopefully this will go a long way for his confidence, which will help us in the playoffs.”

One of Sasso’s favorite targets was sophomore Kyeler Burke, who caught two touchdowns on the night.

“The first touchdown catch was just a jump ball, Sam threw a good ball and I was able to go up there and get it,” Burke said. “On the second one I was able to find the corner and Sam threw the pass and I was able to make the play.”

The Hamilton defense was stout all night, allowing just three Gilbert first downs in the first half. Midway through the second quarter, senior defensive back Levi Sterling intercepted Tiger quarterback Tyler Anderson and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown.

With just over a minute left to play in the half, Sasso found running back Jerrion Acles for a 6-yard touchdown pass to put Hamilton up 42-0 heading into the half.

Hamilton called off the dogs in the second, putting in much of its reserves on both sides of the ball.

“We got kids in that we haven’t had the opportunity to get in this year,” said Belles.

The Huskies return home next week to play Highland, a game that Belles says the team will not overlook.

“We’re going to have to be A-game, they are a very well-disciplined football team,” said Belles. “I know they play great team defense so we are going to have to play well.”
