Carli Jones had three hits and Brianne Grommon pitched a five-hitter and out of jam in the fourth inning Thursday night to lead Mountain View to a 3-2 victory over Red Mountain in the deciding game of their best-of-three 5A East Valley Region playoff series at Quail Run Park.
Mountain View (25-7) earns the top seed from the East Valley Region and will play host Tuesday to a round-of-16 game in the state tournament. Red Mountain (27-7) is the region's No. 2 seed and will host Desert Valley Region No. 3 seed Phoenix North Canyon at 4 p.m. Monday.
HORIZON 2, NORTH CANYON 0: In the 5A Desert Valley Region playoffs, Horizon's Alex Hawley struck out 12 batters and limited the visiting Rattlers to two hits. Nikki Allen and Jenna Lowy each drove in a run and teammate Lindsay Gatti added a triple for the Huskies. Rachel Burger had five strikeouts for North Canyon.
PHOENIX ST. MARY'S 3, HORIZON 1:Analise Rubalcava had two doubles to lead the host Knights over the Huskies in 5A Desert Valley Region post-season play. St. Mary's pitcher Alex Mayo struck out five and allowed only two hits. St. Mary's moves on to state in first place; Horizon follows in second.
YUMA KOFA 2, HAMILTON 1: Alyse Hehe drove in the lone run for the host Huskies as they fell to the Kings in the 5A Fiesta Region tournament. Katie Adkins had with nine strikeouts for Hamilton.
YUMA KOFA 3, HAMILTON 0: Andrea Renteria won a pitcher's duel for Kofa against Hamilton's Katie Adkins. Renteria struck out seven and the Kings blanked the Huskies in the 5A Fiesta Region playoffs. Kofa's Katie Kellie had two hits.
