It could have been the biggest win Tempe Prep history.

That part is debatable given the Knights’ penchant for playoff victories the past couple years, but Friday night’s 21-20 win over No. 1 Phoenix Northwest Christian ranks right up there.

Northwest Christian (9-1) won this matchup twice last year, 37-0 to end the regular season and then 51-8 in the Division V quarterfinals.

This time, however, Tempe Prep’s defense was the first team in Div. V to stymie the NW Christian offense this season, and the Knights (8-2) - ranked No. 7 in this week’s power rankings - got big plays from Levi Hartzler, Anthony Brittain and special teams in the win.

Perhaps none bigger than Brittain, who earlier threw a 43-yard halfback pass to set up Tempe Prep’s first touchdown of the game. This time, he blocked a NW Christian extra-point attempt with four minutes left that would have tied the game.

Still, trailing by one, NW Christian got the ball back again, but Tempe Prep forced a fourth-and-30 and Hayden Harden’s interception with 1:30 left sealed the upset.

Hartzler had 12 carries for 58 yards and two touchdowns for the Knights. He also had a fumble recovery off a bad snap on a NWC field goal attempt-turned-pass, and a sack.

Hartzler’s TD runs gave Tempe Prep a 14-0 lead in the third quarter, and after NW Christian pulled within 14-7 early in the fourth quarter, Ahmari Underwood returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for the touchdown to push the lead back to 21-7.

Desert Mountain 44, Sandra Day O’Connor 21: The Wolves erased a bit of last week’s disappointing loss to Pinnacle with a 44-0 lead by halftime. Kyle Allen completed 14 of 16 passes for 234 yards and four touchdowns in slightly more than two quarters of play. Mark Andrews had seven catches for 134 yards and three TDs. Joe Duran had 11 tackles and an interception on defense, and Greg Frasco added eight tackles and 1 ½ sacks. The Wolves (8-2) were the No. 9 seed and on the bubble in terms of hosting a Division I first-round playoff game next Friday night.

Paradise Valley 49, Fountain Hills 20: Quarterback Ryan Finley threw for 375 yards and four touchdowns as the Trojans took control with a 21-point second quarter and 28-13 halftime lead. That gap was stretched to 41-13 by the fourth quarter. Jordan Brown was again Finley’s top target with 9 catches for 125 yards while Bailey Thompson had 129 all-purpose yards and scored three TDs (two receiving and one rushing). The win further helps P.V. (7-3 and No. 15 in power rankings) secure a playoff berth in Division III.

Mesquite 44, Deer Valley 20: The Wildcats began their second offensive series with a 70-yard touchdown run by Paul Perry, and Juan Geraldo added another 70-yard TD run later in the game. Adam Stewart also hauled in a 58-yard TD catch in the win. The Wildcats’ (2-8) defense held from there as Mesquite (2-8) finished on an upswing. “Talk about being proud of a group of kids, we’re so proud of them and how they grew up and didn’t quit when they certainly could have,” Mesquite coach Matt Gracey said.

Arcadia 14, Higley 7: Arcadia (4-6) salvaged its final game of the season with the narrow win as the Knights (4-6) committed four turnovers (three interceptions and a fumble). Thomas Bush’s first-quarter TD run was the lone offense for Higley (4-6), but a 7-0 lead evaporated in the third quarter when the Titans scored 14 points. Mythias Young ran for 181 yards and Thomas Bush added 85 yards for the Knights.

AZ Lutheran Academy 41, Valley Christian 32: The Trojans (4-6) couldn’t hold a 20-7 halftime lead as ALA (8-2) scored 34 points in the second half in the comeback win. Valley Christian QB T.J. Widner threw for 221 yards, a TD pass and rushed for two more scores in the loss, but also threw two interceptions. Zach Wolff had five catches for 91 yards for V.C.

Scottsdale Christian 48, Cortez 13: Luke O’Neill ran for 124 yards on eight carries and had 100 yards passing and three touchdowns as SCA (8-1) stormed out to a 41-0 halftime lead. The win nearly guarantees a top-four seed in the Div. V playoffs and a pair of home playoff games.

Coronado 21, Combs 7: Coronado ended its frustrating season on a high note as the Dons (4-6) rushed for 316 yards in the win. Antonio Sutherland had two TD runs for Coronado and Anthony Hantzsche added another. Leroy Valentine’s 38-yard TD catch from Drew Johnson was Combs (1-9) for the lone score of the night.
