Opposing coaches don’t seem to care that Phoenix Pinnacle lost the bulk of its offense and defense, including starting quarterback Evan Johnson — the player who led the team in rushing and passing last season.

While coach Dana Zupke said his team may have snuck up on some people last season, it’s not something that’s going to happen this year.

Pinnacle had no problem moving up a classification from 4A-I to 5A-II in 2007, posting a 9-3 record, grabbing the No. 2 overall seed in the state tournament and advancing to the quarterfinals.

Last year, Pinnacle finished just 2-2 in region play, but nonregion wins over Avondale Westview, Glendale Mountain Ridge and Gilbert Highland helped catapult them to the high tournament seeding.

“I don’t think anybody’s going to underestimate us,” Zupke said.

Running back Taylor Stib returns and likely will see the bulk of the carries.

The quarterback position is still undecided. Bryce Wawrzyniak and Alex Cappellini are in the mix, but Peoria Centennial transfer Colton Boven is also pushing for the top spot.

Fred Herdman is back to anchor the offensive line.

The junior varsity team finished 7-1 last season, so reinforcement troops are on the way.

One preseason publication already has the Pioneers ranked No. 3 in the state.

“It’s not coming from me, and I don’t know if it’s deserved, but absolutely (the recognition) is nice,” Zupke said. “We’ve got some talent and we’re attempting to put a quality product on the field. Our goal has never really changed.”
