Mesquite boys basketball coach Tom Saltzstein has resigned, although the reason for him doing so is unclear.
Athletic director Anthony Scanio received the resignation letter late last week, but he said it wasn’t at the behest of the administration.
“We did not ask anyone to resign,” Scanio said.
Saltzstein declined comment when reached on Sunday night.
Another source close to the situation, however, disputed that account.
The source said there was a meeting between Saltzstein, Scanio and principal Cecillia Peterson on Thursday afternoon.
According to the source, in the meeting, Saltzstein was told by Peterson that the school would be bringing in a different boys basketball coach. The source also said Saltzstein is likely to continue teaching at the school next year.
The Wildcats went 25-5 this season, winning the Central Region tournament before being upset in the first round of the 5A Division I state tournament by Corona del Sol. Mesquite advanced to the 5A-I quarterfinals last season.
In addition, Mesquite baseball coach Jeff Holland said he doesn’t expect to return next season because of district-wide reductions.
“With (budget cuts), they’re going to cut teachers, and I’m on the chopping block,” Holland said.
