04/22 - Tennis: Highland, Corona girls advance

Kim Thomson and Megan Speirs slipped past Paige Schottler and Lindsay Thompson, 10-7, as host Highland defeated Chandler, 5-4, in second-round action of the 5A state girls tournament.

The Hawks jumped to an early lead after posting three victories in the doubles category, but the Wolves pulled within reach after securing wins in three single matchups.

Jennifer Mota defeated Bethany Konchan, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, to clinch the game for Highland. The Hawks will start third-round action at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Highland.

CORONA DEL SOL 5, PHOENIX NORTH 0: The Aztecs swept the Mustangs. Lynley Wasson led the way for Corona, beating Christine Roe, while Andrea Schams, Hillary Hood, Meghan Houk and Beth Lyons all defeated their North opponents.

RED MOUNTAIN 5, DESERT VISTA 0:

Katie Callison defeated Tiffany Robb 6-0, 6-0 to lead the Mountain Lions over the Thunder. Emily Callison defeated Stephanie Tzeng 6-0, 6-2 for Red Mountain. Red Mountain advances to play Tucson Salpointe.

BOYS TOURNAMENT

GILBERT 5, PHOENIX NORTH CANYON 1: John Chapman led the Tigers pass the Rattlers. Chapman defeated Daniel Ospina, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3, while Dale Varro, Abraham Itty, Tyler Trent and Jordan Sawadogo all defeated their North Canyon opponents.

RED MOUNTAIN 5, DESERT VISTA 2:

Gregory Peck won 6-0, 6-2 to lead the Mountain Lions over the Thunder. Craig Johnson, Tyler Crauch and Matt Given also defeated their Desert Vista opponents to give Red Mountain the match.

NOTES

Mountain Pointe’s Dan Nguyen and Coronal’s Wasson were named the top seeds for the 5A state tennis singles tournament. Wasson, the defending state champ, defeated Tucson Salpointe Catholic’s Claire Soper in the title match last year. Soper is the second seed, as is Salpointe’s Peter Zimmer for the boys. Nguyen was the state runner-up a year ago.

Mountain Pointe’s Erik Sheldon and Geoff Embry are the No. 2 seed in boys doubles and Red Mountain’s Lindsey Keeler and Colleen Sullivan are the No. 2 seed in girls doubles.
