Desert Vista had five runners place in the top 10 to take first place with a score of 22 in the girls portion of the Tempe City Cross Country Championship at Kiwanis Park on Thursday.

Brittany Tretbar had the best finish for the Thunder as she came in second with a time of 19:22.5.

She finished behind Kylee Kieser of Marcos de Niza, who took first place with a time of 19:03.6.

The other Desert Vista runners who placed in the top 10 were Yasmin Yacut (third place), Megan Kupres (fourth place), Nicole Hicks (sixth place) and Natalie Kraft (seventh place).

Marcos came finished second with 57 points, followed by Corona del Sol with 70 and Mountain Pointe with 76.

On the boys side, Corona placed four runners in the top 10 to finish with 33 points and take first place.

Jared Hirschl placed first overall for the Aztecs with a time of 16:30.1. Jake Whitney finished sixth followed by Daniel Wrapp and James Hert in seventh and eighth place.

Eduard Roa of McClintock came in second with a time of 16:31.0. He was followed by Ryan Maack of Desert Vista with a time of 16:40.4.

Desert Vista finished second with a score of 37, followed by McClintock with 84, Mountain Pointe with 86 and Marcos with 111.

VOLLEYBALL

Horizon improved on its perfect region record with its straight-set victory over host Chaparral on Thursday.

The Huskies defeated the Firebirds 25-10, 25-21, 25-23 in a 5A Division II Desert Valley Region match.

Nikki Hess led the way with 12 kills and 12 digs for Horizon (22-9, 6-0). Melissa Hess added seven kills and one block.

Lexi Anderson finished with 30 assists and 26 digs and Justine Konderik had 22 digs.

Cactus Shadows breezed to a 3-set win over visiting McClintock in a 4A-I Desert Sky Region match, 25-17, 25-8, 25-9.

Summer Anderson led the way with 10 kills and two blocks for the Falcons (15-1, 13-0). Carly Lenzen had seven kills and two aces and Leah Manac added three kills and two aces.

Tempe dropped a close match to visiting Maricopa, losing in a five sets in a 4A-II East Sky Region match, 25-21, 21-25, 13-25, 25-19, 16-14.

Brianna Hale had 27 assists and 11 digs for Tempe (1-17, 0-14). Malisha Tso added 16 digs, six aces and four kills.

Notre Dame defeated visiting Coronado in straight sets, 25-10, 25-12, 25-6 in a 4A-II East Sky Region match.

Genevieve Pirotte had nine kills, five digs and one ace for the Saints (14-9, 10-3). Juliana Brutsche added 13 digs, six kills, one block and one ace.

GIRLS GOLF

Xavier had two golfers tie for first place as the Gators defeated Salpointe by a score of 147-163 at Camelback Golf Club.

Daffodil Sanchez and Kaira Martin each shot a one-under par score of 35 to tie for first place.

Sarah Schmelzel took third place for Xavier with a score of 37.

Notre Dame had all top-five individuals as it defeated Higley by a score of 186-278 at Sanctuary Golf Course.

Kelsie Sanborn took first place with a four-over par score of 39. Anna Hughes (43) came in second followed by Bronte Carney (49), Becca Schiffer (55) and Mollie Hughes (60).
