Heavyweight Trevor Stapp clinched the No. 1 seed for Tempe Corona del Sol with a pin on Saturday.
He sewed up a semifinal bid with a pin on Wednesday night.
Stapp pinned Jocsan Tamayo 11 seconds into the match as the Aztecs knocked off Phoenix Brophy 47-24 at Corona del Sol in the 5A Division I state team wrestling tournament.
“This is furthest we’ve been able to get,’’ said Stapp, a senior. “The past two years, we’ve lost in the quarterfinals.”
Corona will meet Mesa Dobson at 4:30 p.m. today at Chandler Hamilton. The winner will advance to the championship at 7:30 p.m.
Stapp won his second heavyweight title in the individual state championship at Jobing.com Arena in Glendale and his pin in the title match — the final match of the evening — gave Corona the top seed in the team tournament.
Taking home the team trophy would mean a lot, Stapp said.
“We’re a close team,” he said. “Now we have a shot at it. Hopefully, we can we win it.”
In the opening round in the afternoon, No. 9 Brophy knocked off No. 8 Chandler Basha 35-31.
Corona rolled over Gilbert Mesquite 60-6.
“That’s the first time we’ve knocked off a top-10 team in the state tournament,” Brophy coach Brad Frank said.
Despite starting the evening match with two forfeits, Brophy managed to make it close until the three final matches.
“Our kids took their shot,” said Frank, who lost one wrestler to mononucleosis and one to a shoulder separation.
For Corona, Ryan Miller won a decision at 125 pounds, Jordan Pagel won a 15-1 technical fall at 130 and David Hoover won with a pin at 135 to make it 26-0.
Cody Norton (140), Clint Norton (145) and Jack Auran (160) won with pins for Brophy to cut the gap to 29-18.
When Bryan Click won a 3-2 decision at 189, Brophy was within striking distance, trailing 29-24.
Corona then finished with pins in the last three matches.
“Brophy had a goal. They knew what they needed to do,” Corona coach Dave Vibber said. “We’ve got 14 guys who come together as a team.”
