Ryan Evans took advantage of a second chance.
Chandler Hamilton's 6-foot-6 senior scored on an offensive rebound with nine seconds left in the second overtime to give the Huskies a 76-74 win over visiting Gilbert Mesquite in a Fiesta Region boys basketball tournament game Monday night.
Mesquite (9-17) was unable to get a shot off in the final seconds and saw its season come to a close.
Evans missed a lay-in with just seconds left in the first overtime.
"We called a set for the kid on the last play," Hamilton coach Kevin Hartwig said. "(John Jackson) was getting overplayed, so he attacked. It just so happened on that set play the big guy was rotating on the baseline so on (Jackson's) miss he was down there.
"Again, it's being in the right place at the right time and it worked out that way."
Hamilton (19-9) will play region top-seed Gilbert Highland Wednesday.
Jackson led all scorers with 23 points. Evans had 20.
Mesquite trailed by 16 in the first half. It scored the final seven points of the second quarter and the first eight of the third, to tie the game 32-32. The Wildcats led 45-38 with 1:10 left in the third quarter.
During the final three minutes of regulation, there were 11 ties.
Hamilton senior guard Justin Peters hit a 3-pointer with 42 seconds left to give his team a 74-71 lead, but Mesquite senior Marty Armstrong answered with a 3-pointer of his own, well beyond the 3-point arc, for the game's final tie with 28 seconds to go.
"I could not be more proud of the way our kids battled," Mesquite coach Tom Saltzstein said.
"It's extremely disappointing. I feel terrible for our seniors."
Senior Alex Rudd led Mesquite with 19 points, 17 in the second half. Senior Samuel Zepeda came off the bench and scored 16. Sophomore Christian Bower had 15.
