VX Roundup 1/24: Gilbert boys hoops win again; Bailey has 42-21 night for Higley

Gilbert continued its late-season success with another boys basketball win on Thursday night, a 64-49 win at Mesquite.

The Tigers used a 28-13 scoring advantage in the second and third quarters combined to pull away.

Connor Helvig led Gilbert with 17 points. Sophomore Truman Moore added 13 points and eight rebounds for the Tigers (17-5 overall, 10-2 in power rankings games).

Zach Green scored 26 points to lead Mesquite.

The Tigers will face Dobson on Friday night for the second time in seven days.

Boys Basketball

Higley 77, Campo Verde 63: Higley's Quinn Bailey scored 42 points and grabbed 21 rebounds, and was 18-of-22 shooting from the field. Ryan Waters scored 19 for Higley as well. Higley used a 16-2 3rd quarter run to beat the Coyotes. Devante Walker lead the Coyotes with 19 points.

Saguaro 81, Tempe 76: The three team captains led the way for Saguaro in this high-scoring affair in Div. II. Ryan Berg scored 31 points, Mike Hauser scored 20 points and Matt Hauser added 17 for the Sabercats.

Joy Christian 88, Chandler Prep 69: A 22-12 third-quarter advantage for Joy Christian helped put the game away. Cody Nicely led all scorers with 26 points for JC, while Trevor Deason added 18 in the win. Jake Clydesdale scored 18 points, Chris Knight scored 16 and Travis Farschman added 15 for Chandler Prep.

Boys Soccer

Campo Verde 5, Williams Field 1: Sam Gleadle scored four goals for Campo in the win. His early goal put Campo Verde in the lead for good, despite Williams Field keeping possession. A penalty kick took the wind out of the possession game for Williams Field as they were trying to claw back in to the match. Daniel Arellano had two assists for the Coyotes.

Girls Soccer

Valley Christian 1, Phoenix Country Day 1: In a physical match with several yellow cards, freshman Sophia Ames scored with barely five minutes left in regulation for Valley Christian, but PCD tied the match shortly thereafter, and, despite the return of VC's senior captain Kelsey Reade from injury and a strong match from Jenny Pursley, neither team scored in the extra sessions.

Mesquite 2, Dobson 0
