It isn’t traditional Mountain View run-it-up-the-gut football but third-year coach Chad DeGrenier has the Toros perfect after four games with a big test coming next week.

Mountain View took advantage of Perry turnovers early and quarterback John Clark’s five TD passes led the way in a 51-16 homecoming night win on Friday.

“From two years ago to where we are two years later, I’m proud of these guys,” said DeGrenier.

Perry (2-2) had three fumbles in the first half and nine penalties to keep them from getting any momentum, scoring only when Mountain View itself fumbled and Perry returned it to the Toro 10. The Pumas added a late touchdown in the dying minutes.

“They gave us some short fields and we capitalized and our kids just did a good job,” DeGrenier said. “We’re trying to do a better job when we get some turnovers to score.”

On this night, it was Clark taking on the spotlight. He was 14-of-24 for 306 yards and seemed to find his receivers when he needed to all night. In particular, Clark Brown, who caught five passes for 154 yards and two scores.

“We were trying to make some plays,” Clark said. “It was fun.”

Brown’s first catch seemed to set the tone – a catch-and-run 35-yarder down the home sideline on the Toros’ second play from scrimmage. That was after the first Puma miscue, when Austin Nightingale never got the ball cleanly on a shotgun snap and Mountain View’s Michael Barker recovered.

A little more than a minute later, Perry coughed it up again, a mishandled handoff that Erick Eckstein jumped on for the Toros at the Puma 24. Clark found Robby Millward on a short pass this time and to show how things were going, there was a bad snap on the extra point but Clark rolled out and found Jason Hall in the end zone for two points.

Perry never recovered.

“We’re picking it up after the first game,” said Eckstein of narrowly beating Anthem Boulder Creek 24-19. “In the first game, we kind of struggled. We just getting better and better every game. We shut them down tonight.”

Clark hit Hansen Williams with a 16-yard strike later in the first and then Brown made a nifty 59-yard score on a hitch pattern, weaving through the Puma defense on the third play of the second quarter.

Mountain View led 37-6 at the half and never looked back.

“I’m embarrassed how we played,” said Perry coach Preston Jones. “We’ll get better, it can’t get any worse than that. I’ve never been beat so bad knowing it could have been an actual game.”

However, Pinnacle looms ahead for the Toros as the schedule becomes gradually more difficult.

“It feels great but we got next week to worry about, think about, practice for, so I’m excited,” Clark said.
