VX Roundup 3/1: Sammy Rea sets RBI record in Desert Mountain win

Sophomore infielder Sammy Rea set a new Desert Mountain school record with nine RBI in a 18-6 win over McClintock on Friday in Division I softball.

Rea had four of the Wolves' 17 hits on the day as Desert Mountain overcame three of its errors in the rout.

Cassie Belt picked up the win for the Wolves, her first of the season.


Mountain View 3, Desert Ridge 0: Valerie Kaff pitched the complete game 4 hitter, striking out ten batters. The Toros' offense was lead by junior Brittany Lindblom, who singled and scored to start the first inning, and then drove in two runs with a single in the fifth.

Red Mountain 7, Casa Grande 0: Marian Ruf threw a two-hit shutout at Casa Grande in the win. Ruf allowed only four runners on base and the Lions had 10 hits. That included a 3-for-3 day for Ashley Hill and three hits from Kenzy Gutierrez. Red Mountain took the lead in the first, scoring runs in the first, fifth and seventh for a total of seven runs and 10 hits.

Queen Creek 7, Campo Verde 4: Ryland Estrada powered Queen Creek softball to a win over visiting Campo Verde in the Bulldogs’ season opener Friday. Estrada went 2-for-4 with a double, home run and two RBIs. Lexis Valenzuela also went 2-for-4 and knocked in one run. Ryann Holmes drove in two runs. Madi Merrell pitched a complete game and struck out five batters. Sam Leighty had two hits for the Coyotes (0-2).

Superior 20, Gilbert Christian 4:  Gilbert Christian suffered a blowout defeat in six innings at the hands of host Superior. Alexandria Moffett collected two hits for the Knights (0-3). Kari Erickson had one hit and knocked in two runs for Gilbert Christian.


Williams Field 12, Poston Butte 11: Williams Field trailed 3-0 in the first, then scored 6 by the end of the third. Poston Butte pulled to within a run on more than one occasion, but in the end, the Black Hawks came out on top from strong days at the plate by Branden Amenta, Skyler Wengert, and Chris Kobar. The game was eventually closed out for a save by Brady Ahern.
