VX Roundup 11/27: Chandler boys soccer wins on comeback

Boys Soccer

Chandler 3, Cibola 2 (OT): Chandler trailed 2-0 in the first half, but came back to tie it in second half on Jairo Castro's two goals. He scored his third goal for the hat trick in the first overtime to complete Chandler's comeback. Jesus Cortes, Don Tchilao, and Blake Evans earned assists on Castro's goals.

Basha 2, Perry 1: Goals by Kevin Beck and the game-winner by Nick Mazzafaro lifted the Bears in this intra-district rivalry.

Dobson 4, Skyline 0: Ernesto Rios had two goals and Alejandro Garnica 1 goal, 2 assists. Jose Rico Garibay made three saves in the shutout for Dobson. Jose Gaxiola added a goal while Cesar Trasvina and James Deroon each had assists.  Skyline's defense held up well in keeping it to a 1-0 score until late in the second half.

Campo Verde 12, Apache Junction 0:   Daniel Arrellano and Sam Gleadle each posted hat tricks in the win, while Gleadle also had four assists. Luke Gleadle added two goals and two assists for the Coyotes.

Scottsdale Christian 4, Fountain Hills 3: Cole Lenderink scored twice and added an assist, while Zach Swain and David Amono added goals for the Eagles.

Westwood 2, Chaparral 2: Manuel Bojorquez and Julian Galvan scored for Westwood while Colter L’Heureux and Chris Sanchez notched goals for Chaparral in the season opener for both teams.

Pinnacle 4, Horizon 1;  Gilbert 5, Mesquite 1

Girls Soccer

Perry 2, Basha 0: Jensen Gorton and Makenna Dunn notched second-half goals for the Pumas in the big win over their neighborhood rivals, while Marisa Costagliola and Gina Brocamonte added assists. Perry goalie Samantha DeMarco earned the shutout with 14 saves.

Campo Verde 5, Williams Field 0: Freshman Lauren Crenshaw scored 2, Esperanza Collins, Jacque Dompier (goal and assist) and Maia Gajate  all had goals. Meg McDowell had 2 assists.

Pinnacle 4, Horizon 0:  Jorian Baucom scored twice in the  first half and Lilly Brown and Jessica Carpenter also scored for the Pioneers.

Arcadia 11, Marcos de Niza 1:  Sophomore Megan Hawkins scored four goals while senior Anna Workman and junior Anika Carlson each scored twice in the Titans' victory. Rachel DiTullio, Annie Sherman and Missy Dominick added goals for Arcadia.

Coronado 5, Tempe Prep 0

Boys Basketball

Dobson 82, Chandler 61: A 51-33 second-half advantage helped Dobson pull away with the win. Jaron Hopkins led Dobson with 27 points and Ryan Richardson scored 20 for the Mustangs (5-1). Ryan Glick added 10 points for Dobson while junior forward Bear Mosley led Chandler (3-3) with 23 points. Marco Morales added 14 for the Wolves.


Desert Mountain 70, Westwood 49: Diego Magana scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Wolves to victory. Remy Smith added 16 points. Jerome Robinson had 22 points to lead Westwood.

Mesa 73, McClintock 67: D.J. Henderson had 20 points to lead the Jackrabbits to the victory, while Isaac Allen added eight points, 11 rebounds and eight blocks. Ben Cuevas had 26 to lead the Chargers.
