Mountain Pointe beat Hamilton, 2-1, in the second day of the Horizon Big League Dugout Invitational on Wednesday at Horizon High School.
The Pride (7-3-1) got on the board in the second inning when Scott Kingery hit a two-run home run with Sam Kingery on base. Zach Cordova pitched a complete game in the win.
Mountain Pointe will play at Brophy and Hamilton will play Rocky Mountain (Colorado) at Horizon H.S. on Thursday in the final day of pool play.
Elsewhere in the Horizon Big League Dugout Invitational, Corona del Sol beat IMG Academy (Florida), 12-1, in five innings. Chris Tate pitched a complete game and improved his record to 3-1 for the Aztecs (9-4). Corona scored all its runs in the first two innings and had five players with at least two hits.
Red Mountain won a pair of games in the Desert Mountain Tournament on Wednesday at Horizon Park. First, the Lions easily beat Poston Butte, 17-0. Ashley Hill led Red Mountain with five RBI, while Marian Ruff and Bre Macha each added two RBI. Siera Phillips got the win with eight strikeouts. In the night game, the Lions beat Desert Mountain, 8-5, in eight innings. Marisa Mayes, Halley Culley and Payton Kornfeind had consecutive hits in the extra frame to get the win. Macha threw a gem with 12 strikeouts.
Elsewhere in the Desert Mountain tournament, St. Mary's beat Mesquite, 5-4, at Horizon Park. The Knights scored all five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning when the Wildcats committed four errors. Mesquite lost despite outhitting St. Mary's 14-9.
Visiting Xavier beat Mountain Pointe, 7-1, in a Division I Section III game. Katie Park led the Gators with a 3-for-4 effort including a double, triple and two RBI. Xavier broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning with five runs to seal the win.
Visiting Highland beat Desert Ridge, 25-17, 25-16, 25-19. Isaac Turley once again had a strong match for the Hawks (4-1) with 13 kills and four blocks. Collin Ward added 32 assists and seven digs.
