Updated baseball rankings, as of March 4:

Division I

1. Desert Mountain 6-1

2. Hamilton 4-1

3. Sandra Day O’Connor 5-0

4. Corona del Sol 4-1

5. Desert Ridge 5-2

6. Basha 4-1

7. St. Mary’s 7-0

8. Mountain Pointe 2-1

9. Red Mountain 5-2

10. Perry 5-0

It was a good start to the season for expected contenders Desert Mountain and Hamilton, but not so much for the other three preseason top-five teams. The Wolves take over the top spot with an impressive showing in the Scottsdale Invitational Tournament, which included wins over Gilbert, Sunrise Mountain and Saguaro. Hamilton lost its season opener to Mountain View but has reeled off four straight wins to only drop one spot. Pinnacle (2-5), Chaparral (2-3) and Brophy (2-3), meanwhile, are off to slow starts and fell from the early rankings. Sandra Day O’Connor, Corona del Sol and Desert Ridge took advantage to jump into the top-5, while Basha, St. Mary’s, Red Mountain and Perry enter the rankings with hot starts. Mountain Pointe stayed at No. 8, while Gilbert dropped out after a 3-3 start.

Division II

1. Sunnyslope 4-0-1

2. Notre Dame 5-1

3. Liberty 4-0-1

4. Sunrise Mountain 4-2

5. Ironwood RIdge 7-0

6. Sahuaro 4-1

7. Catalina Foothills 5-1

8. Gila Ridge 5-1

9. Canyon del Oro 1-1

10. Williams Field 5-1

The top Division II teams were much more consistent than their Division I brethren. Sunnyslope shut out three of its first five opponents, and a tie against Liberty was the only thing stopping it from a perfect start. Notre Dame won the prestigious Scottsdale Invitational Tournament by knocking off Desert Mountain in the championship game, and also has wins over Chaparral, Desert Ridge and Salpointe already. Liberty moves up one spot with a good start, while Sunrise Mountain drops to No. 4 after losses to Desert Mountain and Desert Ridge. Ironwood Ridge stormed out of the gates to win the Cowboy Up Invitational and moves up four spots to No. 5. Sahuaro drops one to No. 6, followed by a surging Catalina Foothills team. Gila Ridge performed well at the Adam Donnenfield Tournament, highlighted by a win over Brophy, to join the rankings at No. 8, while Canyon del Oro drops one spot to No. 9. Williams Field has won five of six to start the year, including a nice victory over Basha, to join the rankings. Salpointe, Sabino and Cactus Shadows dropped out.

Division III

1. Fountain Hills 10-0

2. Scottsdale Christian 0-0

3. River Valley 5-1-1

4. Mingus 5-0

5. Show Low 4-1

Fountain Hills didn’t waste any time, becoming the first team in the state to double-digit victories with a 10-0 start, including wins over Blue Ridge and Show Low. That moves the Falcons up to No. 1, dropping down a Scottsdale Christian team that hasn’t started playing yet. River Valley also moves down a spot, followed by an undefeated Mingus team. Show Low stays at No. 5, while Blue Ridge drops out after a 2-2 start.

Division IV

1. St. David 0-0

2. Phoenix Christian 3-1

3. Valley Lutheran 1-0

4. Pusch Ridge 6-0

5. Desert Christian 4-1

St. David hasn’t played yet and nobody dominated enough to move it from No. 1. Phoenix Christian dropped a game to Central but shut out its other three opponents to stick at No. 2. Valley Lutheran stays at No. 3 with a win in its opener, followed by a Pusch Ridge team which made a big impression the first week. Desert Christian drops one spot to round out the top five. Scottsdale Prep drops from the rankings after an 0-2 start.
