The Hamilton girls volleyball team continued its hot early-season start by winning the title at the Westwood Tournament of Champions on Saturday.
The Huskies defeated Desert Vista, 25-22, 25-13, in the title match to improve to 15-1 on the season. The team's lone defeat came to the Thunder earlier in the tournament.
Hamilton lost star outside hitter Brittany Thomas to graduation and standout setter Roxanne Lake to transfer from last year but hasn't missed a beat. The team has only two seniors but the young starters have come up big in crucial moments.
Hamilton's already had its fair share of important matches, which includes a 2-0 mark against Gilbert in addition to the tournament title.
"If you would have asked me in July and August (if the team could start this well), I would have told you you were crazy," Hamilton coach Sharon Vanis said. "There were so many unknowns."
Sophomore Olivia Hallaran played very well in the tournament, and Vanis credited the team's depth for the impressive start.
"We don't really have that one superstar, but we can bring people in off the bench and not miss a beat," she said.
Hamilton had never won this tournament before. It advanced to the finals by defeating Phoenix Sunnyslope in the semis. Desert Vista made it there with a semifinal win over Chaparral.
