Despite a strong start from Dobson, Corona del Sol was able to pick up its first win of the season, 37-14,  Friday in convincing fashion.

Dobson started the game out with a strong drive led by quarterback Joshua Jaramillo, capped off by an 8-yard scramble for a touchdown.

Corona del Sol answered back, however, with a touchdown pass from backup quarterback Matt Asta - who played on and off throughout the game. He connected with Tevin Mayfield for a 14-yard touchdown to tie the game at 7-7.

Corona scored again on its next drive with a 48-yard dash from running back George Wright. A two-point conversion run by Asta gave the Aztecs a lead for the first time, and Corona (1-6) stayed on top from there.

The Aztecs game against Dobson was their first of the season against a team that is currently below .500 on the season.

“Corona has played a pretty tough schedule,” said Mustangs coach George De La Torre. “We’ve seen tapes of those games and we’ve seen how they’ve played. We knew we had our hands full because they play with a lot of energy.”

Jaramillo tried to keep the Mustangs close, and brought the score to within one point with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Ford. Dobson (2-5) struggled to move the ball on offense in the final three quarters, however, and couldn’t get into the end zone again on the night after trailing 15-14.

Normally-starting quarterback RJ Rhiner took over for Corona midway through the first quarter and expanded the lead with a 43-yard touchdown pass to Mayfield.

Mayfield was the Aztecs' top target, and finished the night with five catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns.

The Aztec offense put up 314 yards rushing, with 57 of that coming from Rhiner. For the most part, though, Corona relied on Wright leading the way on the ground with 16 carries for 103 yards and three touchdowns.

Rhiner finished the night 4-for-9 with 139 yard passing and one touchdown with an interception. Asta handled several of the drives in the game, with Rhiner sitting out the last two drives because of a hard hit he took late in the fourth quarter.

Asta seemed poised to handle the offense when needed and ended the game 3-for-3 with 52 yards and a touchdown.

“Matt’s a great kid, he works hard every day. He’s got a senior in front of him (on the depth chart), but we’ve got no problem putting the ball in his hands,” said Aztecs interim coach Tim Kelly, who picked up his first win after taking over the three weeks ago.

Wright scored Corona’s final two touchdowns on the night with two goal line runs. Kicker Chris Baker added a 27-yard field goal of his own, and the Aztecs were able to line up in victory formation for the first time this season.

“Part of it, yes, you could say the schedule has been tough, but part of it was us just not coming together as a team,” said Rhiner. “We’re finally starting to come together as a team, and it was a great night.”
