Prep Highlights: Armijo’s homer lifts Mountain Pointe over Chandler

Taylor Armijo hit a two-run tiebreaking home run with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning Saturday and give the Phoenix Mountain Pointe baseball team a 7-5 win over Chandler High in the third-place game of the Scottsdale Quarterback Club Tournament at Mountain Pointe.

Two batters before Armijo hit his homer, the Pride’s Eric Klem hit a two-out three-run home run to tie the score.

The Wolves’ Michael Morales went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs and teammate Tim Barraza was 1-for-4 with a home run.

Jake Waldren (2-0) pitched five innings for the win, and Klem’s brother, Ryan, pitched two scoreless innings for the save.


Valley Christian won twice in the Desert Classic Tournament. In the first game, David Blasi and Sam Moore combined to go 2-for-5 with two home runs and five RBIs, as the host Trojans beat Heber Mogollon, 12-0.

In the second game, starter Brenden Curlepta struck out 10 in five innings to pick up his first win, and Blasi hit a two-run homer during a seven-run fourth inning, as the Trojans beat Upland (Calif.) Christian, 8-0. Valley Christian finished 5-0 in the tournament.

Jordan Adair went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs and pitched two innings in relief to help Mesa beat Higley 9-3 in a consolation game at the Scottsdale Quarterback Club Tournament. Mesa’s Scott Valdez pitched four innings in the start, allowing no runs on two hits with three strikeouts.

Jesse Feininger hit a double and a triple for the Jackrabbits. Jeff Aguilar went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Knights.

Russ Tuemmler drove in four runs and Shane Urban, Gus Monteverde and Tim Willsey each homered as Mountain View knocked off Hamilton 14-4 in the final game of the Desert Vista Baseball Tournament at Desert Vista.

Matt Shannon had three hits for Mountain View (6-0). Hamilton got two doubles and three RBIs from Matt Helm.

In an earlier game, Mountain View beat Desert Vista 9-2. Coltin White was 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs. Daniel Forrest’s two-run double highlighted a five-run second inning. Shannon earned the victory with a complete-game five-hitter.
