The Mesa Red Mountain boys basketball team dared someone other than John Bailey to beat it Tuesday night.

Kyle Heck happily obliged.

While Bailey faced constant double teams, Heck shouldered the scoring load to lead Mesa Dobson to an easy 68-57 victory over Red Mountain in a 5A-I non-region contest that was more lopsided than the final score indicated.

Heck finished with 22 points, 15 of which came in the first half when Dobson built a 37-18 lead at intermission despite top two scorers Bailey and Jarrett Green being held to seven cumulative points.

Cole Thurston added 14 for the Mustangs.

“We had different guys really step up,” Dobson coach Rick McConnell said. “Kyle Heck is very capable, and I thought he was smart. He picked apart their defense a few times and it really helped.”

Bailey finished with 11 points, four below his season average, but added seven rebounds and four assists. When the defense crashed down on him, he would continually find his teammates, which often led to open shots.

“John didn’t get flustered at all against the trap,” McConnell said. “They came at him hard and he made some good decisions.”

Dobson (6-0) took control from the start, racing out to a 13-point lead after one quarter and pushing that lead to as many as 21 in the first half.

Both teams came in undefeated with tournament championships under their belts.

“They played well and we played well (in the respective tournaments),” McConnell said. “This was important because you had to come out and play someone that was on a roll, too.”

Paul Newendyke led the Mountain Lions with 18 points.
