All but one seeded player reached the quarterfinals of the 5A-I boys state singles tennis tournament after the completion of the second and third rounds Saturday at Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale.

Mesa Red Mountain’s Kevin Kienitz was the only nonseeded player to reach Friday’s quarterfinals after a forfeit win over No. 6 Ken Zhu (Phoenix Mountain Pointe) in the second round and a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Daniel Larsson of Tempe Corona del Sol in the third round.

Mesa Dobson’s Jacob Spizman toughed out a 7-5, 7-6 win against Tucson Salpointe Catholic’s Mitch McDaniels in his third-round match.

No. 2 Andy Nguyen (Mountain Pointe), No. 4 Garret Dunn (Corona del Sol) and No. 7 Nelson Divall (Scottsdale Desert Mountain) also advanced.

Two East Valley schools each placed two teams in the 5A-I quarterfinals after Saturday’s second and third rounds at Paseo Racquet Center. Corona del Sol’s duo of Kyle Ogren and partner Ben Duong, seeded eighth, and Raghu Menon and partner Tanner Hatch, seeded fourth, joined Desert Vista’s tandems of No. 7 Austin Soe and Michael Sato and top-ranked Jacob Barnaby and Ahmad Saleem. The top eight seeds all advanced, with No. 3 Eric Chalmers and Chris Salvatore (Brophy), No. 5 Ben Smith and Nate Paulson (Red Mountain), and No. 6 Jeremy Feldman and Brian Merdinger (Desert Mountain) earning the final spots.

After three rounds of play in the 5A-I singles tournament, the top eight seeds, including No. 1 Kacie Wagner of Gilbert, all advanced to the quarterfinals. No. 2 Mele Iongi and No. 3 Shawni Porter of Mountain View both won in straight sets.

No. 1 Shelly Johnson of Horizon defeated Breanna Salem of Surprise Willow Canyon 6-0, 6-0, to advance to the quarterfinals of the 5A-II girls singles tournament. Johnson will battle No. 8 Dannie Dolle of Surprise Valley Vista on Friday at Paseo Racquet Center. Pinnacle’s No. 7 Kaila Knopf also advanced.

Xavier’s Ashley Wingersky and Sarah Serrano have easily made their way into the 5A-I quarterfinals, allowing their opponents to win only one game in two matches. No. 2 Wingersky and Serrano will next take on No. 7 Zoe Manos and Christine Johnson of Mountain Pointe. Desert Vista’s team of Kristen and Kat Hunnicutt will play Lucy Brimhall and Aneta Papayova of Mountain View, who pulled off an upset of No. 6 Alyssa Wagenhals and Melissa Yu of Xavier. The quarterfinals are Friday at Paseo Racquet Center.

The pairings of Chelsi Redpath and Cassie Corcoran and Jessica Trink and Brianna Forster of Horizon both advanced to the 5A-II quarterfinals. Skyline’s Alexandra Larson and Rosie Highsmith also advanced.
