VX Roundup 1/21: Weiss' goal keeps Hamilton unbeaten

Sam Weiss was the only player that could find the back of the net, Friday, as the Hamilton girls soccer team went on the road and squeaked out a 1-0 victory over Red Mountain.

Weiss' goal came in the first half, giving the Huskies a lead at the break that they were able to hang on to thanks to their stellar defense.

Hamilton pushed their record to 19-0-1 with the win.

Boys Basketball

Led by Randy Azuogu's 20 points, Desert Mountain had three scorers in double figures  in a 70-63 victory against Horizon.

The Huskies lost despite 27 points from Collin Woods.

Peter Smith scored 16 and Austin Cooke added 11 for the Wolves.

Allen Martinez poured in 34 points for Coronado, but it was Dimitri Jones' 25 points that led Higley to a 75-66 win versus the Dons.

The win improved the Knights' record to 8-9 on the year.

Girls Basketball

Horizon's Madison Austin outdueled Desert Mountain's Carly Rose 17 points to 16,with that one point being a difference in a 54-53 Huskies victory over the host Wolves.

A 22-6 fourth quarter helped Desert Mountain run away from Marcos de Niza, 55-38. Kaitlyn Snyder and Brooke Violette led the Jaguars with 10 points apiece.

Sydnee Lengyel was the leading scorer for the Padres with 17.

Boys Soccer

Ethan Taplin and Dean Stevens both scored goals for Notre Dame, while goal keeper Tommy Hebert kept Coronado scoreless, as the Saints blanked the Dons, 2-0.

With the victory, Notre Dame kept their record a perfect 12-0, while Coronado dropped to 7-4 on the season.

Marco Jimenez, Charlie Dukes and Emanuel Castillo all scored goals in Gilbert's 3-0 win against Mountain View.

Mountain View improved to 13-4-2 on the year. Gilbert slipped to 12-3-2 with the loss.

Omar Lopez and Misael Buendia each had two goals apiece for Tempe, while goal keeper Victor Sanchez made two body-stretching saves, resulting in a 5-1 victory over Maricopa.

Sammy Flores scored the lone goal for the Rams (4-7), while Salvador Sanchez had the fifth goal for Tempe (7-6).

Girls Soccer

Nikki Walts knocked in two goals, while teammate Michaela Dooley added another as Xavier beat Desert Vista 3-1.

The Gators are now 13-5 overall.
