Final regular season softball rankings:

Division I

1. Mountain Ridge

2. Horizon

3. Gilbert

4. Red Mountain

5. Basha

6. Desert Ridge

7. Mountain View

8. Desert Mountain

9. Xavier

10. Perry

With the final regular season games being played on Wednesday (at the latest), Mountain Ridge continues to roll heading into a big matchup against Centennial on Monday. So, too, is Horizon, which has won 13 consecutive games including a 2-1 win over Mountain View in a complete pitchers’ duel between Tamara Statman and Val Kaff, won by the former. The Huskies, however, have to face a hot Desert Mountain team on Tuesday and Xavier to end the season Wednesday. Basha’s 3-2 loss to Desert Ridge sends the Bears down two spots, and a big game against Gilbert awaits on Tuesday, followed by a desperate Highland team Wednesday. Red Mountain’s pitching has come on strong the past four weeks and the Lions have won eight consecutive games. Desert Ridge moves up by beating Basha, Perry and Highland in the past week (D-Ridge hosts Highland again on Tuesday), while Mountain View (loss to Horizon) and Xavier (lost to Basha; beat Chaparral) fall a bit with losses. The bottom five teams are so close together, a case can be made for them to be put in pretty much any order you want. Given the schedule for several schools between Monday and Wednesday, expect another moderate shakeup in the power rankings/state tournament seedings.

Division II

1. Sunrise Mountain

2. Paradise Valley

3. Canyon del Oro

4. Greenway

5. Cactus

Sunrise Mountain might be the best team in the state regardless of division. They’ve certainly played like it almost the entire season, and hammered Cactus, Raymond Kellis and Liberty last week. Those are three good teams, and another (Greenway) arrives on Wednesday to end the season. Canyon del Oro falls after a 7-6 loss to Marana last week, which allows Paradise Valley and its 9-game winning streak to move up to No. 2. Greenway holds at No. 4 with a not-so-easy ending to its schedule this week (at Thunderbird, at Sunrise Mountain) while sitting at No. 8 in the power rankings as of Monday. Raymond Kellis falls out after the Sunrise Mountain loss (by a 9-0 margin) and Cactus (9-7) wins out for the No. 5 spot over Verrado (15-1) because of the Cobras’ vastly more difficult schedule.

Division III

1. Estrella Foothills

2. Empire

3. Winslow

4. Benson

5. Morenci

Winslow falls from No. 1 after it lost to Div. II schools Coconino and Flagstaff last week, though both were contests. Estrella Foothills claims the top spot while riding a 14-game winning streak, while Empire (undefeated in power rankings games but plays at Benson on Wednesday). Benson stays put, though it could make a big final push this week with games at Willcox, at Douglas and home vs. Empire. Morenci falls out after losing to Safford, while opens the door for Payson (undefeated in power rankings games), which hasn’t lost a game since the Wrangler Classic tournament to begin March. Granted, the schedule hasn’t been real difficult.

Division IV

1. Arizona Lutheran

2. NW Christian

3. San Manuel

4. Phoenix Christian

5. St. Johns

Even the smaller schools weren’t immune to a shake-up. Phoenix Christian lost big to Bourgade Catholi and St. Johns lost big to Blue Ridge, so each drops. Tanque Verde falls out after losing big to Div. III Empire, and San Manuel sneaks all the way up into the No. 3 spot on a nice seven-game winning streak. Watch out for Valley Christian, Salt River and Valley Union, all of whom could make a claim for one of these spots.
