01/31 - Boys basketball roundup: Chargers wrap up Skyline Region title

McClintock celebrated the 4A Skyline Region championship Friday night with an 84-68 win over host Glendale.

The Chargers (20-3, 10-1 Skyline) locked up the region title ahead of Phoenix Thunderbird, which is 9-2 in region with both losses coming to McClintock.

Jermaine Calvin led the Chargers with 24 points. Gabe Freeman added 19 points and Marcus Nicholson 15 for McClintock. D.J. Nicholas scored 25 for Glendale.

MOUNTAIN VIEW 57, DOBSON 52:

Max Hall led in both scoring (23 points) and rebounding (14) for the Toros (20-1, 7-1) as they edged the visiting Mustangs in a 5A East Valley matchup. David Burrows scored 11 for Mountain View and Matt McConnell had 13 points for Dobson.

TUCSON 56, WESTWOOD 48: A late rally by the Warriors could not make up for a slow start as the Badgers (17-3) won. Jesse West led Westwood (9-11) with 12 points.

CHAPARRAL 56, CORONADO 52:

The Firebirds rode a 20-point first quarter to victory over the visiting Dons in a 4A East Sky matchup. Andrew Washko led Chaparral (15-7, 8-2) with 18 points and Ike Davis added 12. Coronado’s Tareq Ramirez led all scorers with 24 points.

HIGHLAND 32, GILBERT 27: Ryan McCurdy led the Hawks with 11 points as they beat the Tigers (12-10) in a 5A Fiesta game. Stas Chomokos had 13 points for the Gilbert.

HORIZON 92, YUMA KOFA 57:

Steven Harris scored 20 points as the host Huskies (15-6, 6-3) beat the Kings in a 5A Desert Valley Region game. Rishi Kakad had 18 points and nine assists for Horizon.

CHANDLER 73, MESQUITE 43:

Lawrence Westbrook scored 26 points and Joey Shaw added 15 as the Wolves (11-9, 2-4) blew out the visiting Wildcats (2-4 region) in 5A Fiesta Region play. Saunders Montague led Mesquite with 12 points.

SAGUARO 71, ARCADIA 34: Derek Tarapacki led the Sabercats (19-5, 10-0) with 19 points as they beat the visiting Titans in a 4A East Sky Region game. C.J. Venezia had 14 points and Danny O’Boyle scored 12 for Saguaro. Luke Kosters scored 13 for Arcadia.

VALLEY CHRISTIAN 80, NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN 56: Brian Roberts scored 20 points as the host Trojans (22-2, 11-0) beat the Eagles in 2A Metro Region play. Brian Botma added 16 points for Valley Christian.

HIGLEY 54, COOLIDGE 43: The Knights dominated in the middle quarters to beat the Bears in a 3A South Region game. Reggie Riley led Higley (14-8, 7-6) with 19 points. Elijah White led Coolidge (14-10, 7-6) with nine points.

SETON CATHOLIC 66, GOODYEAR ESTRELLA FOOTHILLS 47: The Sentinels remained atop the 3A South Region standings with a win over the Wolves. Matt Refner had 16 points and Jordan Wolf added 15 points and 11 rebounds for Seton (20-3, 12-1). Brad Hickman led Estrella Foothills with 21.

BOURGADE CATHOLIC 42, PHOENIX COUNTRY DAY 33: Justin Abbate and Matt Kostrivas each scored 10 for the visiting Eagles, but they still fell to Bourgade in a 2A Metro Region game.

RED MOUNTAIN 65, SKYLINE 51:

David Hall led visiting Red Mountain with 20 points as they got past Skyline (6-16) in a 5A East Valley Region game. Tyrone Araya led the Coyotes with 18 points.

CACTUS SHADOWS 67, NOTRE DAME PREP 56: The visiting Falcons (9-13, 4-6) overpowered the Saints (2-19, 0-10) in a 4A Desert Sky Region game. Ryan Elmore led the Falcons with 23 points. Tom Fow led Notre Dame with 15 points.

APACHE JUNCTION 69, DESERT RIDGE 51: Steven Richardson scored 23 points to lead the Prospectors (16-9, 5-5 4A East Sky) to victory over the host Jaguars (12-14, 4-7). Josh Fetter scored 13 points for the Desert Ridge.

CORONA DEL SOL 67, YUMA 54:

Craig Borengasser and Clayton Bates each scored 13 points to lead the visiting Aztecs (15-6, 3-2) over the Criminals in a 5A Central game.

DESERT VISTA 46, MOUNTAIN POINTE 44: Dutch Parryman hit two free throws with 22 seconds left to lift the Thunder (11-10, 3-2) over the visiting Pride (10-11, 3-2). Xavier Kilby led the Thunder with 17 points.
