Pat Herrera, who coached Desert Ridge baseball to consecutive state championships in 2009 and 2010, resigned on Thursday, according to athletic director Darrell Stangle.

Herrera called his players in for a team meeting Thursday and notified them of the decision, saying it was made for family reasons, according to a player who was present at the meeting.

Herrera turned the Jaguars into one of the state's elite programs, winning more than 20 games every year since 2008. He has a record of 208-89-2 since 2005.

"We appreciate everything he did for the program and the success he had," Stangle said. "I believe it's one of the top two or three programs - it's one of the most coveted in the state."

Herrera did not immediately respond to a voice message.

Desert Ridge went 26-6 this year and was one of Division I's best teams throughout the regular season but lost in the second round of the state tournament to Mountain Pointe.

The Jaguars defeated Horizon, 9-8, in the 5A Division II championship game in 2009. They beat Mesquite, 11-4, in the 2010 finals to win the 5A-I title.

Shortstop Riley Unroe is a Player of the Year candidate and is expected to be taken within the top two rounds of June's MLB Draft.

Herrera also coached former Tribune Players of the Year Jake Barrett and Scott Hoffman. Desert Ridge has won 26 games or more in five of the last six years.
