Marcos de Niza quarterback Josh Eckley is clearly the most valuable player for the Padres, and the senior proved his worth again Friday night.

With the help of a solid running game and a timely defense, Eckley guided No. 6 Marcos to its sixth win of the season, this time a 37-13 road victory over Westwood in a Division II, Section VI contest at Westwood.

“He’s a great quarterback, and he can do it with his arm and his legs,” Marcos de Niza coach Roy Lopez said afterward.

Eckley finished the game with 154 passing yards, one touchdown through the air, and scoring runs of 55 and 32 yards in the second half.

“That kid competes as well as anyone I’ve ever coached,” Lopez added. “When he turns it on, he turns it on.”

After rallying from behind last week against Poston Butte, the Padres' offense took control from the beginning against Westwood.

Marcos de Niza (6-2, 2-1) scored on its third offensive play of the game, when junior tailback Luke Nguyen zipped around the right side of Westwood’s defense for a 60-yard touchdown.

Westwood also gave up a safety in the second quarter. Pinned at their own one yard line and forced to punt, quarterback/punter Kane Tieman bobbled the snap deep in the end zone, and was eventually tackled for the safety.

Later in the second half, Eckley tossed an 18-yard touchdown pass to Jake Lagunas which gave Marcos de Niza a 16-0 lead just before halftime.

Westwood found a spark in the third quarter behind the arm of Tieman and hard-running sophomore Ethan Johnson. Each scored on short touchdown runs, but Eckley and Marcos de Niza always had an answer.

Eckley’s 55-yard touchdown run in the third quarter gave Marcos a 23-6 lead, and came two plays after Westwood had scored its first touchdown and gained some momentum. Eckley’s 32-yard scoring run midway through the 4th quarter sealed the win.

Ethan Johnson finished with 118 yards on the ground for Westwood (4-4, 0-3)

Lagunas added a 1-yard touchdown run to cap the scoring.
