Tyler Miller stole the ball with three seconds left to preserve the Chandler Basha boys basketball team’s 54-52 victory over Gilbert Highland in the championship game of the Salpointe Tip-Off Classic on Saturday at Tucson Salpointe Catholic. It is the first invitational tournament championship for the Bears (4-1) in their short history.
Nick Markovich led Basha with 20 points, Miller added 14 points and 13 rebounds and Brelan Berry finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Nick Johnson led the Hawks (4-1) with 18 points.
The two teams will meet again Tuesday at Basha.
Gilbert beat host Mesa 56-44 in the championship game of the Fear the Hop Tournament. The Tigers (3-0) outscored the Jackrabbits (2-1) 22-12 in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
Elliott Clark led Gilbert with 21 points and Shawn King added 15. Dante Medder led the Jackrabbits with 14 points.
Kyle Heck scored 13 points and John Bailey added 12 as Dobson beat Desert Mountain in the fifth-place game of the Fear the Hop Tournament at Mesa. Casey Benford added 10 points for the Mustangs (2-1). Danny Franz led the Wolves (1-2) with 21 points.
Host Paradise Valley got two free throws from Naheer Mirza to lift the Trojans past Notre Dame 52-51 in overtime in the Paradise Valley Tournament. Mirza was fouled with 4.5 seconds left and the Trojans (3-1) trailing by one. Mirza led Paradise Valley with 22 points and Rich Vasquez added 19. John St. Thomas scored 14 points for the Saints (2-1).
Gilbert won the consolation game of the Highland Thanksgiving Girls Basketball Tournament at Highland with a 53-49 victory over Dobson. Whitney Southerland led the Tigers (5-1) with 25 points. Justine Johnson added 14 for Gilbert.
Earlier in the day, the Tigers beat Basha 64-51. Against the Bears, the Tigers were again led by Southerland, who finished with 22 points.
Westwood won the consolation game of the Moon Valley Invitational with a 48-32 victory over Peoria Centennial at Phoenix Moon Valley.
Whitney Redford led the Warriors with 15 points and Teanna Boxley added 10 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. The Warriors finished 4-2 in the tournament, which included a 48-20 win over Avondale Agua Fria earlier Saturday. Boxley finished with 19 points and Gabby Lopez had 14 points and 11 rebounds against the Owls.
Seton Catholic had little problem with Corona del Sol in a 62-47 win in the Highland Thanksgiving Girls Basketball Tournament at Mesquite.
Theresa Wirth finished with 23 points to lead the Sentinels, while Katie Doerer added 15 points and seven rebounds.
