McKenna Isenberg is only 14 years old, but she can pitch.

The Corona del Sol freshman went the distance and tossed a shutout while her teammates scored three runs in the first inning as the 15th-seeded Aztecs upset No. 2 Red Mountain, 4-0, in the first round of the 5A Division I state softball tournament on Saturday.

The Aztecs added another run in the sixth while Isenberg and the defense took control of a good-hitting Red Mountain squad.

Mary Spiel had two hits and scored twice for the Aztecs, and Taylor Tometich had the big hit with a two-run double in the first inning. She also eventually scored.

Corona will travel to Glendale Mountain Ridge for a 4 p.m. matchup on Wednesday.

Lions’ ace Mel Willadsen struck out 10 Aztecs in defeat. Taylor Beck had two hits and Courtney Sherwin reached base twice for the Lions, who will host Phoenix Maryvale on Wednesday afternoon.

5A-I

St. Mary’s 2, Buena 0: Dallas Escobedo threw a perfect game with 23 strikeouts and hit a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead top-seeded St. Mary’s over No. 16 Buena. The No. 1-seed Knights host No. 8 Gilbert on Wednesday.

Skyline 6, Alhambra 4: Skyline held on for the win as Jenny Willis went 2-for-3 with a home run, double and two RBI. Myranda Redden finished 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI to help the Coyotes. Sam Quintero went 2-for-3 with a home run and an RBI for Alhambra. Alhambra trailed 6-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Xavier 6, Desert Ridge 3: The fourth-seeded Gators scored five runs in the middle three innings to pull away an otherwise close game and defeat the Jaguars. Trisha Thompson improved to 10-3 on the season while Lauren Johnson had two hits for the Gators in their balanced attack. Desert Ridge travel to Alhambra on Wednesday while the Gators host Skyline.

Casa Grande 4, Mountain Pointe 3: Two fifth-inning errors by the Pride opened the door for Casa Grande’s comeback and an outfield error allowed the game-winning run to score in the 6th inning. Cecily Abbadessa had two hits and two RBI, and Nyla Wambold had an RBI triple for the Pride, who play at Basha on Tuesday. Bailey Wigness had four hits and Shelby Pacheco drove in two runs for Casa Grande, which hosts Highland on Wednesday.

5A-II

Desert Mountain 2, Chaparral 1: Kasey McCravey hit a two-run double in the top of the sixth and the Wolves held on late to beat their Desert Valley Region rivals. Andrea Wellins earned the win for No. 12 Desert Mountain, while Rae Ball went the distance for the 5th-seeded Firebirds. Taylor Benally hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth for Chaparral.

Perry 4, Lake Havasu 0:  Jessica Wilkinson pitched a two hit game with nine strikeouts as host Perry beat Lake Havasu 4-0 in the 5A II State Softball Tournament. Chelsea Tate had a homerun her only hit of the game and Erycka Ruiz had a two RBI double to lead the Pumas who will play Centennial on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Centennial.
