Scottsdale Desert Mountain’s Emily Harris and Phoenix Xavier’s Vianett Mena finished the first day of the 5A state singles badminton tournament at Mesa Dobson unbeaten (3-0) and will meet in today’s semifinals.
Phoenix Desert Vista’s Melissa Vasley, Chandler’s Amy Cappucio, Gilbert Highland’s Lily Spurlock and Phoenix Mountain Pointe’s Ashley Dreas are still alive in the tournament as well.
5A DOUBLES
The doubles teams from Chandler and Tempe Corona del Sol each finished the first day of the 5A state tournament undefeated. Corona del Sol’s Carrie Zhao and Amy Davis defeated teams from Gilbert and Mesa Skyline.
Chandler’s squad of Guadelupe Farfan and Alheli Jacquez beat their opponents from Xavier, Phoenix South Mountain and Mesa Red Mountain.
4A SINGLES
Chandler Perry’s Veronica Celaya advanced to the semifinals of the 4A state singles tournament at Glendale Independence, beating Phoenix Cortez’s Alice Kolo, Phoenix Sunnyslope’s Megan Hallick and Goodyear Millennium’s Mega Imre.
Celaya will face Independence’s Jessica Ruiz in today’s semifinals.
Scottsdale Chaparral’s Katie Conti lost her second-round match, but won two contests in the losers bracket, finishing with a 3-1 record.
4A DOUBLES
Chaparral’s doubles teams of Liz Hudson-Leslie Appleton and Sarah Plitt-Christian McGuire each finished the first day of the 4A state doubles tournament undefeated and will meet in today’s semifinals.
The winner advances to the finals.
Hudson and Appleton beat teams from Cortez, Shadow Mountain and Tempe McClintock on their way to an unbeaten day.
Plitt and McGuire beat teams from Tempe, Phoenix Arcadia and McClintock.
