Visiting Valley Christian ended the regular season with a 49-12 win over Phoenix North Pointe Prep in a 2A Central Region game. The Trojans (6-3, 2-3) led 27-0 at halftime thanks in large part to the running of Tyler Hunt, who rushed for four touchdowns by halftime. For the game, Hunt finished with 167 yards on 11 carries.
Sean Higgins scored the other first half touchdown for the Trojans on a 57 yard run and he finished the game with nine carries for 98 yards.
Valley Christian forced five North Pointe turnovers and won the game on the ground as the Trojans rushed for 324 yards on 42 carries. North Pointe Prep was not whistled for a single penalty and actually had two more first downs for the game then the Trojans, but NPP hurt itself with turnovers.
Northwest Christian 56, Scottsdale Christian 21: In a battle of ranked teams to conclude the 2A regular season, Casey Jahn rushed for 154 yards and three touchdowns – all in the second quarter – on 21 carries for the Crusaders (8-1). Jahn also returned an interception 73 yards for another score as Phoenix Northwest Christian blew the game open before halftime. Chauncey Wright had 209 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries for Scottsdale Christian (7-2), but the Eagles committed four turnovers in the loss. SCA will still host a first-round playoff game next week despite the loss. Mike Hopkins had 65 yards on six carries for the Eagles.
Dobson 21, Corona del Sol 14: Host Dobson hung on to beat Corona del Sol in a 5A I Central Region game. The Mustangs (2-8) took a 21-7 lead in the third quarter on a 35-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by Siaosi Feinga. The Aztecs (1-9) got a 10-yard touchdown run by Dominic Mercurio, his second touchdown of the game, to cut it to 21-14 heading into the fourth quarter. The Dobson defense held Corona scoreless in the fourth to get the Mustangs’ second win of the season. Gabe Martinez threw a pair of touchdown passes to T.J. Thomas and Yah Mensah for Dobson.
Marcos de Niza 61, Skyline 7: Host Marcos de Niza beat Skyline in a 5A East Valley Region game. Padre quarterback Tommy Thornton was 7-of-12 passing for 182 yards and two touchdowns. Marcos (8-1, 4-1) led 26-0 at halftime and was never threatened. Antonio Warner added five carries for 115 yards and Jeryan Butler had 125 yards receiving and two total touchdowns for the Padres.
Arcadia 48, Tempe 7: Host Arcadia led 28-0 by the end of the first quarter and cruised to a 4A-II East Sky Region victory. The Titans (6-3, 3-3) got three touchdown runs by Sosaia Maafu in the first quarter all from two yards out or less. The Titans were fortunate, as they committed six fumbles, but only lost one while the Buffaloes threw two interceptions. Cole Richardson threw two touchdown passes to Jared Thorn of 15 and 14 yards, and tossed a 22-yarder to Alex Reynolds.
Paradise Valley 43, Cortez 8: This one was over at the end of one quarter as visiting Paradise Valley beat Phoenix Cortez in a 4A-II Black Canyon Region game. The Trojans (2-8) led 37-0 heading into the second quarter on three touchdown pass from Ryan Finley, two touchdown runs by Jerry Allen and a safety by Jack Fattaleh. Finley added a 45-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, the last score of the game for Paradise Valley. The Trojans had no turnovers and only four more first downs than Cortez, but after taking the big first quarter lead Paradise Valley played conservatively.
Horizon 48, Desert Mountain 7: Visiting Horizon beat Desert Mountain in a 5A II Desert Valley Region game. Matt Jones rushed for four touchdowns for the Huskies (7-2, 3-1). Calvin Martin threw an 80-yard touchdown pass to Collin Sommer for the Wolves only touchdown of the game. Jones finished with 81 yards rushing for Horizon, while quarterback Ryan Stanford threw for 160 yards and a score. Martin threw for 137 yards for the Wolves and Sommer added 80 yards receiving.
Prescott 34, McClintock 12: McClintock fell to host Prescott in a 4A-I nonregion game. Marshall Dirksen hit a pair of field goals for the Chargers of 46 and 35 yards. Joe Wells scored the only touchdown of the game for McClintock on a 12-yard reception.
Fountain Hills 28, Empire 7: In a 3A matchup, the Falcons finished the regular season with two consecutive wins. Fountain Hills (7-3) led 14-0 and then sealed the game with 14 points in the fourth quarter, and the Falcons will host a 3A playoff game next week.
Florence 49, San Tan Foothills 0: Visiting Florence shutout San Tan Foothills in a 3A South Region game. The Gophers scored all their points in the second and third quarter and held San Tan Foothills to just five first downs.
