02/05 Roundup: Collins, Mountain Pointe upend Marcos de Niza

Brett Collins led all scorers with 33 points as host Mountain Pointe cruised in the fourth quarter Tuesday to secure a victory over Marcos de Niza, 65-51, in a boys 5A Central Region contest.

The Padres (20-6, 4-4) were up, 42-41, going into the fourth, but a 24-point quarter helped the Pride (12-7, 4-3) earn the win. Jon Ziri led Marcos de Niza with 14 points and Dubois Williams added 13.

PARADISE VALLEY 65, PHOENIX ST. MARY'S 58: Brooks French had 16 points and nine rebounds to lead the visiting Trojans (20-5, 8-1) over the Knights (10-11, 5-4) in double overtime of a 5A Desert Valley Region game. Calvin Chitwood had 15 points and 14 rebounds for Paradise Valley. Levi Lopez had 14 points and Michael Baker had 13 for St. Mary's.

GILBERT 49, CHANDLER 37: Sean Cayton hit two key fourth quarter 3-pointers to propel the visiting Tigers (24-2, 8-1) past the Wolves (12-13, 4-6) in a 5A Fiesta Region contest. Ryan Toolson led Gilbert with 20 points and Mike Grothaus added 13. Mike Bartee had 10 points for Chandler.

TEMPE 58, CHAPARRAL 53: the free-throw line to help the visiting Buffaloes (9-10, 5-4) pull away in the fourth quarter and defeat the Firebirds in 4A East Sky Region action. Meadows led all scorers with 18 points and also had four steals. Todd Crittendon led Chaparral with 11 points and Andrew Washko added 10 points.

MOUNTAIN VIEW 74, SKYLINE 43: Dallas Rensch led all scorers with 17 points as the visiting Toros (22-4, 8-1) topped the Coyotes (7-17, 1-8) in a 5A East Valley Region contest. Mountain View's Yahosh Bonner added 16 points. Chris Handler led Skyline with nine points and Dustin Kereluk scored six points and added 12 rebounds.

DOBSON 64, RED MOUNTAIN 54: Jeff Hibbing had 16 points and Matt McConell added 15 as the visiting Mustangs (17-10, 8-1) downed the Mountain Lions (11-15, 4-5) in a 5A East Valley Region game. Chris Geesling led Red Mountain with 21 points and Preston Pacheco added 17. The game was tied at 40 heading into the fourth quarter.

MESQUITE 41, HAMILTON 40: Tyler McGinn had 10 points as the visiting Wildcats (16-9, 4-5) squeaked past the Huskies (19-8, 7-2) in a 5A Fiesta Region contest. Hamilton's Lerin Wells led all scorers with 12 points.

CORONA DEL SOL 66, DESERT MOUNTAIN 54: Craig Borengasser had 18 points as the Aztecs (10-14, 2-5) beat the Wolves in a 5A Central region game. Steven Koehnemann had 13 and T.J. Benson had 11 for Corona. Chad Goldstein led Desert Mountain with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

MESA 75, WESTWOOD 57: Jared Westergard had a game-high 23 points to lead the visiting Jackrabbits (16-10, 6-3) over the Warriors (6-19, 0-9) in a 5A East Valley Region matchup. Matt Komenda added 16 points for Mesa, while Robert Boyd led Westwood with 15 points.

SAGUARO 75, APACHE JUNCTION 63:Edwin Buffmire had 28 points to power the visiting Sabercats (19-4) past the Prospectors (15-9) in a 4A East Sky Region matchup.

Justin Ashbaugh scored 17 points and Danny O'Boyle added 13 for Saguaro. Steven Elman had 26 points for Apache Junction.

HIGHLAND 88, YUMA KOFA 53: Riley McCormick had 20 points, including six 3-pointers, as the visiting Hawks (13-10, 5-4) cruised past the Kings (10-16, 0-9) in a 5A Fiesta Region game. Ty Del Re added 11 points for Highland.

SHADOW MOUNTAIN 82, HORIZON 76: The Huskies (11-12, 4-5) rallied in the second half to force overtime, but couldn't prevail in the extra period falling to the host Matadors (13-10, 3-6) in a 5A Desert Valley Region game. Jason Burkhardt scored 37 points to lead Horizon and Joe Brooks added 18.

ARCADIA 62, CORONADO 53: Trent Button scored 30 points in the East Sky region matchup as the Titans beat the Dons. Nick Galvan had 17 for Coronado.

SCOTTSDALE CHRISTIAN 51, PHOENIX BOURGADE 48: The Eagles held off a late comeback by the host Golden Eagles in a 2A Metro Region game.

Tim Maiden led SCA (23-4, 13-3) with 14 points, Alex Rogers had 13 and Kevin Coble 12. Nkem Ojougboh contributed seven points and six blocked shots for the Eagles.

GIRLS SOCCER

ARCADIA 5, TEMPE 0: The Titans got goals from five players as they beat the visiting Buffaloes in a first-round game of the 4A East Sky Region tournament.

Arcadia (5-9) will play at 4 p.m. today at Saguaro in the second round.

The Titans got goals from Amy Gallagher, Alex Morrow, Catherine Cacheris, Emily Reyes and Bryn Johnson. Keeper Gwen Johnson earned the shutout for Arcadia.

BOYS SOCCER TEMPE 6, CORONADO 0: Salvador Vera scored five goals and Oscar Fuentes stopped 20 shots for his third shutout of the season as the visiting Buffaloes (8-5-1) beat the Dons in the first round of the 4A East Sky regional. Sergio Hernandez had a goal and three assists for Tempe.
