Tempe hired Paul Long to become its new boys basketball coach on Monday afternoon, he said.

Long went 66-44 in four seasons at Horizon but was fired after a 16-11 finish and a state quarterfinal appearance in 2010-11. He previously coached at Trevor Browne for 13 years, leading the team to a 27-3 record and a state semifinals appearance in 2007.

Long was a finalist for the Chaparral job, which went to Moon Valley coach Dan Peterson. Long interviewed for the Tempe opening on Monday morning and was notified of the administration's decision by the afternoon.

"I'm super excited to get back at it," Long said.

Tempe made the 4A-II championship game two seasons ago behind the play of star guard Jordan Baker, and went 20-9 last year. Long said there are many similarities between the Trevor Browne and Tempe jobs and he believes he can be successful in this stint, as well.

Both schools have a lower-income population with players that come from diverse backgrounds. Long said it was important to his players at Trevor Browne that he was always there for them, and he thinks the same will hold true at Tempe.

"You have to let them know that you care," he said.

Long replaces Bryan Snyder, who went 74-64 in his second stint as coach at the school, which lasted five years. Long will continue to teach at Horizon this year while coaching at Tempe.

The Buffaloes lose the majority of their key players from a season ago, but went a combined 34-4 at the freshmen and junior varsity levels this past year, Long said.
