10/01 - Girls volleyball roundup: Cintron helps Chaparral serve up victory over Saguaro

Renata Miles had 10 kills to help lead host Chaparral (19-6, 6-0) to victory Tuesday over Saguaro (10-12, 5-1), 25-18, 25-15, 25-17, in a 4A East Sky Region contest.

Sara Cintron played a key role on offense, serving 19-for-19, including three aces to help the Firebirds secure the three-set sweep and remain undefeated in conference play.

ARCADIA def. CORONADO, 25-20, 25-9, 25-20: Megan Toth had 13 kills, five blocks and four aces to lead the host Titans (14-5, 4-2) over the Dons (4-7, 2-4) in a 4A East Sky matchup. Ari Turrentime added 12 digs and five aces for Arcadia, while Jennifer Murphy had eight kills for Coronado.

HIGLEY def. GLOBE, 25-12, 25-10, 25-12: The visiting Knights downed the Tigers in 3A South action.

CHANDLER def. MESQUITE, 25-18, 25-15, 25-17: Dominique Lamb had 12 kills and three blocks to lead the Wolves (9-1, 3-0 5A Fiesta) over the host Wildcats (15-7, 0-3). Setter Marina Mercer added 20 assists and five kills for Chandler.

CACTUS SHADOWS def. NOTRE DAME, 25-12, 25-14, 25-6: Cortney Weedman had seven aces, four kills and six assists to help the host Falcons (18-1, 6-0) defeat the Saints in a 4A Desert Sky matchup. Teammates Bobbi Tistle had four kills and one ace and Lora Webster contributed five kills and two aces. Cactus Shadow’s Lara Kilgore helped secure the victory with three aces and one block.


Erin Mickelson had 12 assists and Kahori Lanier had seven kills to charge the visiting Wolves (15-8, 4-2) past the Rattlers in 5A Desert Valley play.

MCCLINTOCK def. SAN LUIS, 25-15, 26-24, 26-24: Jessica Sykora had six kills and five blocks and Janelle Cacker added five kills and 10 assists as the visiting Chargers (2-9, 1-6) downed the Sidewinders in a 4A Skyline Region match. Suzannah Behnken also had five aces for McClintock.

RED MOUNTAIN def. SKYLINE, 25-19, 25-17, 25-9: Christy Lukes had 14 kills and Hana Northington added 28 assists for the visiting Mountain Lions (7-3, 3-3) as they topped the Coyotes. Kate Wallenberg added six digs for Red Mountain in the 5A East Valley matchup.

APACHE JUNCTION def. TEMPE, 25-23, 25-17, 20-25, 25-23: Shannon Fox had 16 kills and Lauren Beck had seven kills as the host Prospectors defeated the Buffaloes (2-11, 1-7) in a 4A East Sky match. Sonya Chavez had 33 assists and Tyesha Merchant added seven kills for Tempe.

HIGHLAND def. HAMILTON, 25-15, 25-17, 26-24: Brittany Barker and Megan Bluth had six kills each and Ali Rogers added 23 assists for the host Hawks (4-5, 2-1) in a 5A Fiesta win over the Huskies.

FOUNTAIN HILLS def. RIO RICO, 21-25, 25-14, 25-15, 25-18: Andrea Halferty had 11 kills, five digs and three aces as the visiting Falcons (9-4, 7-2) beat the Hawks in a 3A South match.

Keryn Boesch had 22 assists and 12 digs and Chelsea Hill had 18 assists and nine digs for Rio Rico.

VALLEY CHRISTIAN def. ARIZONA LUTHERAN, 22-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-16:

Andrea Knotts had seven kills and 10 blocks and Morganne Parsons added six kills, six blocks and three aces to lead the visiting Trojans (18-6, 7-1) past the Eagles in 2A Metro action.

Jennifer Ekstrand added 23 assists for Valley Christian.

SETON def. ELOY SANTA CRUZ, 25-3, 25-4, 25-6: Amy Barlow had seven kills and eight aces as the visiting Sentinels (18-3, 9-0) cruised by the Dust Devils in a 3A South contest. Shannnon Burke added seven kills and three aces and Mo Howell had four kills and an ace for Seton.

PHOENIX COUNTRY DAY def. PHOENIX BOURGADE CATHOLIC, 27-25, 25-17, 21-25, 25-13: Kristen Oelze had 21 kills to power the host Eagles over the Golden Eagles in 2A Metro Region action.

Teammates Sierra Seip and Sabel Burton contributed eight kills each.

MOUNTAIN VIEW def. DOBSON, 25-11, 25-16, 25-13: Brittney Penrod had 12 kills and five digs as the host Toros (18-2, 5-0) swept the Mustangs in 5A East Valley action.

Aimee Brinkerhoff had 20 assists for the Toros.

DESERT VISTA def. MARCOS DE NIZA, 12-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-21:

Leah Lathrop and Nicole Lang each had 18 digs as the host Thunder (11-8, 2-0) beat the Padres (7-3, 1-1) in a 5A Central game.

Kelsey Thomsen added six kills and seven blocks for Desert Vista.
