Prep report: Friend's late run wins Metro Region title

Houston Friend scored all of his five points in overtime as the Scottsdale Christian boys basketball team beat Arizona Lutheran 55-49 for the 2A Metro Region title Thursday at Phoenix College.

Kevin Coble scored 22 points for the Eagles (20-5), who avenged a 21-point loss to the Coyotes earlier this season.

BOYS BASKETBALL

David Schneider hit a 3-pointer as time expired to give Brophy a 74-71 overtime win over host Desert Mountain in a 5A Desert Valley Region game.

Schneider, who scored 30 points, also tied the score at the end of regulation with a 3-pointer. Kevin Hassett had 24 points and 11 rebounds for Desert Mountain. . .

Jerryd Bayless scored 41 points to lead St. Mary's to a 67-66 victory over host Horizon. Bayless hit two free throws with 14 seconds to seal the win for the Knights. . .

Dan Thomas scored 38 points to help host Fountain Hills beat Goodyear Estrella Foothills 83-57 in the semifinals of the 3A West Region tournament. . .

Mike Harty had 17 points, eight rebounds, and six assists to lead top-seeded Seton Catholic past visiting Sahuarita 67-50 in a 3A South Region tournament game.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Valley Christian defeated Phoenix Christian 62-48 in the semifinals of the 2A Metro Region tournament at Phoenix College.

Shamesha Smith and Kim Wigboldy each scored 14 points for the Trojans (26-3), who will face Arizona Lutheran for the region title. . .

Amy Calahan o had 17 points and four steals as Tempe Prep beat visiting Mayer 70-14 in the first round of the 1A West Region tournament.

Nicole Neals had 20 points to lead St. Mary's past visiting Horizon 90-47 in a 5A Desert Valley Region game. Kayli Murphy scored 16 for the Knights (20-4, 9-0). . .

Seton Catholic defeated Globe 38-21 in the semifinals of the 3A South Region tournament. Lindsey Warburton had seven points, five rebounds and six steals for the Sentinels (20-8). . .

Ana Castillo made two free throws with seven seconds left to lead Marcos de Niza past Corona del Sol 67-64 in a 5A Central Region game.

Lisa Helmers had 37 points, 10 rebounds, six turnovers and four assists for Corona. . .

Third-seeded Chaparral scored the winning basket with less than 30 seconds in regulation to defeat host and top seed Saguaro 51-50 in the 4A Desert Sky Region title game. Sam Russell had 14 points for the Firebirds.
