Prep highlights: Hamilton wins twice in tourney

John Jackson and Ryan Evans combined for 48 of Chandler Hamilton’s 56 points Wednesday morning to lead the Huskies (8-1) to a 56-51 victory over Scottsdale Saguaro (9-4) at the Arizona Basketball Challenge at Mesa Mountain View High School.

Jackson scored a game-high 27 points and Evans had 21. They combined to make 18 of 33 field-goal attempts, including nine 3-pointers. Saguaro was led by Matt Rhodes with 18 points and Tyler Tompkins with 10.

In a second-session evening game, Hamilton beat San Diego Horizon Christian 66-46.

Jackson scored 21 points and had eight rebounds. Evans added 12 points and nine rebounds.

Jeff Withey, a 7-footer who has commited to play for Arizona, scored 16 points and had nine rebounds for the Panthers.

BOYS BASKETBALL

In other Arizona Basketball Challenge games, Brendon Lavender led four Mountain View players in double figures as the Toros beat Glendale Cactus 88-64. Nathan Murphy (22), Tyson Ellsworth (13) and Jordan McLelland (10) all helped lead the Toros (10-1). Lavender and Murphy were a combined 15-for-15 at the free throw line and as a team, the Toros shot 12-for-21 (57%) from 3-point range. Mountain View took control in the first half, outscoring the Cobras 46-27 while shooting 59% from the field. The Toros finished the game shooting 57% from the field. .... Cincinnati Taft had four players score in double figures as it routed Valley Christian 70-57. Courtney Davis (17), Richard Harris (14), Angelo Benton (13) and Quavis McKinney (12) paced Taft (7-1) to a 36-18 lead at halftime. Nate Van Weelden led Valley Christian (6-3) with 23 points. … Stefan Oropeza and Rojer Castro scored 14 and 12 points, respectively, as Tucson (6-5) rolled to an easy 65-45 victory over Laveen Cesar Chavez (2-8). … Keawe Enos sank two free throws with 3.6 seconds left to help Red Mountain hang on and defeat Phoenix North 51-48. Enos finished with a team-high 17 points, grabbed nine rebounds and handed out six assists. Paul Newendyke and Bryn Prinsloo scored 11 points each for the Mountain Lions (10-5) and Deonte Roberts chipped in with 10 points and nine rebounds. Prinsloo grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds. North was led by Daniel Bejarano with 23 points. ... Highland put together a 12-0 run midway through the second half to erase a 53-46 deficit and went on to defeat Cleveland Heights, 83-67. Matt Carlino paced the Hawks with 20 points and Josh James added 12, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range. For the game, Highland went 8-for-17 on 3-pointers; Cleveland Heights was just 3-for-15. Travis Kelce led Cleveland Heights with 21 points.

In the first round of the the McClintock Holiday Shootout at McClintock High School, Nate Bohy led all scorers with 34 points as Desert Ridge defeated Chandler 81-80 in overtime. Bohy scored nine points in the fourth quarter and overtime, and Cortez Higgins scored 12 points, 10 of which came in the fourth quarter, for the Jaguars. Eli Godinez led Chandler with 23 points, while Andre Gibson and Mike Dunn each scored 14 for the Wolves.

In other McClintock Holiday Shootout games, St. Mary’s defeated Moon Valley 78-71 in overtime behind leading scorer James Hollins. Hollins scored 16 points in the game, six coming in overtime, and Blake Davis added 13 points for St. Mary’s, which will play Desert Ridge tonight. ... Brophy defeated Mountain Pointe 67-55 despite 19 points from the Pride’s Israel Marshall. Jahii Carson added 14 and Michael Ramirez had 13 for the Pride. Brophy will play Horizon tonight in the second round, while Mountain Pointe will face Tempe. ... Nick Streff scored 25 points as Horizon dominated Tempe 88-50. Stephen Topercer and Eric McGaffin each scored 18 points for Huskies. Jordan Baker and Marcel McClain led the Buffaloes with nine points each. ... Devin Barnes led all scorers with 21 points as Marcos de Niza defeated Glendale Mountain Ridge 74-67. Harrison Evens and Daniel Johnson each added 14 points for the Padres. ...

Leland Devlin scored 16 points as Corona del Sol defeated Tucson Canyon del Oro 69-51. Nick Timpone added 12 points for the Aztecs. ... McClintock beat Casa Grande 67-59. Adrian Green led the Chargers (4-5) with 17 points. Johnell Thompson added 13 points and Devonte Thornburg finished with 12. ... In the final game of the night, Loyola (Los Angeles) beat Desert Mountain 66-48. ...

Tempe Prep played three pre-tournament games in the San Carlos High School Apache Gold Shootout in San Carlos, Ariz. The Knights (9-6) lost to host San Carlos 42-40 in the first game. Manny Sandoval scored 21 points against the Braves, who held a big lead for most of the game. In their second game, the Knights beat Clifton High School 59-41. Matt Mayor scored 29 points in the win. In the third and final game, Tempe Prep beat Miami High School 45-42 in overtime. Mayor and Sandoval led the Knights with 17 and 13 points, respectively. The Knights held a six-point lead early in the overtime before holding on at the end. ...

Forest Stolk led Phoenix Horizon Honors with 21 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks, but the Eagles lost to Peoria High 70-48 in first-round action of the Northwest Valley Holiday Tournament at Greenway High School. The Eagles (6-7) will continue play in the tournament today.

GIRLS SOCCER

Tempe Corona del Sol, the two-time defending 5A-I champions, shut out defending 4A-II champion Flagstaff 6-0 on the first day of the Dobson Mustang Classic at Red Mountain Soccer Complex on Wednesday. Courtney Mayers and Brittany Cole each scored two goals for the Aztecs, while Lexie Schroeder and Alexis Burkhart added one each. Hailey Hayes made four saves. The Aztecs will play Highland today in pool play. ...

In other Mustang Classic matches, Cayla Smith and Kat MacDonald each scored a goal as Mountain Pointe defeated Chandler 2-1. ... Xavier defeated Basha 4-0. Samantha Cummings, Krystal Holland and Carmen Abella each had a goal, while Jessica Fitzgerald had a goal and an assist for the Gators (9-0). ... Gilbert blanked Seton Catholic 3-0.

Gilbert defeated Mountain View 4-1 in pool play in the Dobson Mustang Classic at Red Mountain Park in Mesa. It was a balanced scoring attack for the Tigers (5-4), with Jake Zimmerman, Ryan Fuertsch, Karim Robles and David Urbina each scoring a goal. Ryan Hudson scored the lone goal for Mountain View (3-6). ... In another Dobson Mustang Classic game, Chandler beat Red Mountain 2-0. Jovanny Acevas and Tito Duart each scored a goal for the Wolves (8-2).
