VX Soccer State Tournament roundup 2/2: Campo Verde, Pinnacle, Xavier, Notre Dame girls advance

In a home quarterfinals match for No. 4 Campo Verde's girls soccer team, the Coyotes' Breanna Olsen scored two goals, including one on a penalty kick to lead Campo Verde to a 4-0 win over No. 5 Fountain Hills in the Div. II quarterfinals.

Alissa Carroll and Meg McDowell also scored for the Coyotes, who led 2-0 early and scored a third goal with four seconds left in the first half.

Lauren Crenshaw, Shannon Costello and Sebrina Rodriguez had assists.

Campo Verde will make its first semifinals appearance in the school's brief history when it faces No. 1 Verrado on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Arcadia H.S.

Division II Girls

No. 10 Notre Dame 2, No. 2 Flagstaff 1 (OT): Michelle Mahoney launched a 50-yard boot off a foul with four minutes left in the first overtime, and Notre Dame held on defensively as the 10th-seeded Saints held on to win at No. 2 Flagstaff. Mahoney also assisted on Julia Taffuri's pristine header for a goal to open the scoring 20 minutes into the first half. An unusual play resulted in Taffuri accidentally knocking the ball into Notre Dame's goal which tied the score at 1-1 with eight minutes left in the first half. Freshman goalkeeper Meredith Reinhardt made four clutch saves for Notre Dame, which faces No. 3 Tucson Catalina Foothills in the semifinals on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Paradise Valley H.S.

Division I Girls

No. 1 Pinnacle 3,  No. 8 Perry 0:  Despite an excellent defensive first-half against the high-powered Pinnacle's offense, the Pioneers got on track in the second half.  Jorian Baucom scored twice after halftime, including a penalty kick with 20 minutes left in regulation which gave the Pioneers a 2-0 insurance lead. She also scored her second goal and third overall of the match with nine minutes remaining. Pinnacle will play No. 4 Xavier in the semifinals on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Campo Verde H.S. Pinnacle and Xavier split two matchups this season, with Xavier winning in a tournament and Pinnacle winning during the power rankings schedule.

No. 4 Xavier 4, No. 5 Mountain View (Marana) 0: Marina McMorrow, Maddie Khoilian, Emily Vandenberg and Shelby Roberts all scored goals for Xavier in the win. Cassidy Cunningham, Kellie Peay, Shannon Burke and Michaela Dooley all had assists as the Gators will face No. 1 Pinnacle for a third time this season (each team won once). Time time in the Div. I semifinals on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Campo Verde H.S.

Division I Boys

San Luis 2, Corona del Sol 0:  The No. 2-seeded Aztecs were knocked out of the tournament at home by No. 10 San Luis. San Luis will face No. 3 Desert Vista on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Campo Verde H.S.

Division II Boys

No. 8 Queen Creek 5, No. 1 South Mountain 1: After a nailbiting victory against Cactus Shadows in the first round, the Bulldogs' offense exploded in upsetting the tournament's top seed in Phoenix South Mountain. Mauricio Ramirez's Bulldogs squad will take on No. 4 Tucson Salpointe Catholic in the semifinals on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Paradise Valley H.S.
