It didn’t take long for the Corona del Sol girls volleyball team to forget about being swept Tuesday night by Desert Vista, coach Janna Corbett said.

And it took even less time for the Aztecs to rebound on the court, sweeping visiting Mountain Pointe 25-11, 25-12 in Sammy Duane Gymnasium Thursday. The 5A Central Region match lasted just 39 minutes.

"We were a bit angry after our Tuesday match," Corbett said. "We were just going to come in and not look back."

The Aztecs (13-6, 1-1) stormed out to a 19-5 lead in the second game to

coast to the win, after relying on runs of 6-0 and 8-0 in taking the first game from the Pride (7-3, 1-2).

"We just all wanted to come out more focused," said junior outside hitter Michelle Hein.

Hein said Corbett told the Aztec players to play more relaxed against the Pride than they did two days earlier against the Thunder.

"(She said) just to not be uptight and play like we know how," Hein said.

Hein tallied 11 kills for the Aztecs in the win, while senior Lisa Helmers added nine of her own. Senior setter Joy Peshman had 21 assists.

"I think when you look at any match against anybody it comes down to ball control and the team that can pass and control the best," said Mountain Pointe coach Fred Mann. "They controlled the ball and served really well."

Corona del Sol recorded a dozen points over the two games while Hein was serving, including runs of six and four consecutive Aztec winners. Sophomore Sara Bowden also held serve for eight consecutive points in the second game for the Aztecs, while Mountain Pointe was able to hold serve for longer than two straight points just once during the match.

Mountain Pointe couldn’t duplicate the success it saw Tuesday, when the Pride knocked off Marcos de Niza in three games, 25-18, 20-25, 25-15.

"This group of girls has no quit in them," Mann said of his team. "They’ll bounce back."

Both Mountain Pointe and Corona del Sol sit within the top ten of the 5A Division I volleyball power-point rankings this week, with the Pride sitting in eighth overall and the Aztecs in fifth.

The Pride hit the road again next Tuesday to take on Desert Vista, while the Aztecs stay home to face Basha. Both 5A Central region matchups are slated for 6 p.m.
