If you have Desert Ridge running back Taren Morrison on your Arizona high school fantasy football team, you had a good night.

Morrison, a junior, scored on his first four carries of the game and finished with 257 yards and five touchdowns on just six carries in a 47-6 Desert Ridge victory over Gilbert on Friday night.

The win took the Jaguars to 1-1 on the season; they lost 28-22 at Gardena Serra (Calif.), the No. 2-ranked team in California according to MaxPreps, in Week 1.

Gilbert, which lost 10-3 to Gilbert Mesquite last week, fell to 0-2.

Despite some sloppiness — Desert Ridge lost a fumble on its first play from scrimmage and turned it over two other times on lost fumbles — it was a dominant performance from the Jaguars, who entered the game ranked No. 4 in the state by MaxPreps.

“I liked our defense; our defense played really well. They played fast and physical,” Desert Ridge coach Jeremy Hathcock said. “We’re a real physical team, as you can tell.”

And it wasn’t just the defense that was physical; the Jaguars offensive line paved the way for Desert Ridge to gain 430 rushing yards on 28 carries — a whopping 15.4 yards per carry.

Dylan Spaid had 78 yards on two carries (including a 51-yard score), while Justin Irby finished with 38 yards and Danny Siamau added 30 yards.

But it was Morrison who stole the show, with touchdown runs of 80, 4, 91, 17 and 52 yards.

“It was a night of big plays,” Hathcock said. “I think [Morrison] would be the first to say, ‘My line did a great job,’ and he outran a ton of people. He’s electric. He’s fast.”

Gilbert had a tough time moving the ball on offense, outside of some nice runs by senior quarterback Tyler Stevenson. He completed just 13 of 35 passes for 76 yards but added 147 rushing yards on 16 carries.

Senior kicker Austin Carver connected on field goals of 40 and 39 yards for all six Gilbert points.

Tigers coach Tim Rutt said his team was often caught out of position on many of the big plays for Desert Ridge, but he also said the Jaguars offensive line was explosive off the ball.
