VX Roundup 3/20: Hamilton tops Brophy in Horizon tournament

Hamilton beat Brophy, 5-4, in pool play of the Horizon Big League Dugout Invitational on Tuesday.

The Huskies (10-2) trailed 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Hamilton would tie the score in the final inning and then Cody Bellinger hit a walkoff single to score Connor Woods.

Bellinger finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a solo home run and Woods was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI to lead the Huskies. David Graybill and Chris Beall both finished 2-for-4 with two doubles to lead the Broncos.

Elsewhere in the Horizon Big League Dugout Invitational, Mountain Pointe beat Rocky Mountain (Colorado) 8-2. The Pride (6-3-1) had nine hits compared to six for the Lobos. Brantley Bell finished 2-for-3 with a home run for Mountain Pointe. Jorge Carrazco got his first win of the season with two innings of relief.

Host-Mesquite beat Highland, 5-4, in 10 innings of a Division I Section II game. Jon Ferrendelli had the game-winning RBI to score Spencer Applebach. Ferrendelli pitched the 10th inning and got his second win of the season. He finished 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBI.

Host-Desert Vista beat McClintock, 10-7, in a Division I Section III game. The Thunder scored five runs in the second inning to take control of the game. Hunter Rodriguez went 2-4 with a home run and four RBI to lead Desert Vista. The Chargers scored four runs in the seventh but it was not enough. Preston Ryan led McClintock with a 2-for-4 effort

Visiting Red Mountain beat Skyline, 14-1, in five innings of a Division I Section II game. The Lions had 14 hits led by Aaron Smith who finished 3-for-4 with three RBI. Cody O'Brien was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Tarran Beasley finished 1-for-2 with two RBI and improved his record to 4-0 in four innings pitched. Brian Melendez was 1-for-2 with an RBI for the Coyotes.


Red Mountain came back to beat Tucson Sunnyside, 9-5, in the Desert Mountain Invitational at Horizon Park. The Lions trailed 5-3 in the fifth inning before they scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the sixth. Payton Kornfeind was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI, Jordan Beck finished 3-for-3 with a 3-run home run and Bri Gonzalez had two RBI to lead the Lions. Bre Macha pitched another complete game with nine strikeouts while she allowed eight hits. Macha also had two RBI at the plate.

Visiting Notre Dame beat Mesquite, 1-0, in a non-division game. Tess McPherson pitched a complete game three-hitter and had 15 strikeouts for the Saints.

Boys Volleyball

Corona del Sol beat Mountain View, 25-17, 12-25, 25-21, 25-19. Alex Davis led the Aztecs (5-0) with 17 kills. Sean Hughes added 11 kills and Jake Nuneviller finished with 29 assists.

Gilbert beat Desert Ridge, 25-14, 25-12, 25-19. Spencer Wright led the Tigers (4-0) with 13 kills and Cody Martin added 10 kills.

Highland beat Higley, 25-14, 25-21, 25-12. Isaac Turley led the Hawks (3-1) with 13 kills and two aces. Jeff Chapman added 10 kills and Collin Ward finished with 36 assists and two aces.
