Ironwood showcased a potent rushing attack as they ran past St. Mary's, 62-37, on Friday night at Phoenix College.

The Eagles racked up a total of 530 rushing yards with two running backs going over the 200-yard mark. Sophomore Jett Robertson scored five touchdowns rolling up 268 yards on 24 carries.

Bruising runner Michael Alexander gained 203 yards on 24 rushes and two touchdowns. Robertson in only his second game on the varsity has to thank his parents for naming him Jett, ideal for a fast and talented running back.

All of the Eagles' touchdowns came on the ground.

Ironwood trailed 14-0 after the first quarter. The Eagles and St. Mary's were both looking to go to 2-0 on the season and Ironwood wants to build on a seven win season. The Eagles stunned the Knights for 33 points in the second quarter to lead 33-17 at halftime and never looked back.

St. Mary's (1-1) came out of the gates strong as they took the opening kick and marched 65 yards in eight plays capped off by a Lukas Treffers' 1-yard run, the first of his three touchdowns on the night. Treffers then finished off an 88-yard drive hauling in a 3-yard touchdown pass from Gabe Losada.

Ironwood came up empty after a missed pair of field goal attempts, but after the missed field goals they went for first down on fourth and 1 and Alexander then hit paydirt from a yard out on the first play of the second quarter. Robertson then turned on his speed and scampered 30 yards for a TD. After a 37-yard field goal from Nick Perry it was the Eagles who then erupted for the last 18 points of the quarter to break the game open.

Michael Gallardo, who had a night of solid kick and punt returns, took one 63 yards to the house as Ironwood took their first lead at 19-17. Robertson in forty two seconds added a two more TDs with runs of 2 and 62 yards to build a 33-17 halftime cushion.

Roberston turned on the turbo for two more touchdowns in the second half on runs of 22 and his fifth TD he took it 64 yards to the house.

A bright spot for St. Mary's was Lester Smith who had 198 yards rushing on 20 carries with touchdown runs of 21 and 19 yards.
